Characteristics

Two spectacular, world-class, golf courses have been built at Verdura in 2009, one of very few sites on the rugged, rolling island of Sicily where such an opportunity is possible. California-based Kyle Phillips has created two exciting 18-hole championship courses and a nine-hole course that meander around indigenous orange and olive groves, using terrain that undulates from mountain foothills down to the Mediterranean seashore. After an extensive renovation both course have been opened again end of 2021.

Phillips, who designed the stunning Kingsbarns Links just outside St Andrews in Scotland, and also the immaculate parkland courses at The Grove in Hertfordshire, as well as numerous US projects, is renowned for preserving and accentuating the essential character of the site, through his creative use of both natural and man-made landforms.

The East Course is 7,396 yards long and the West Course is 7,160 yards from the championship tees; the Short Course, a nine-hole par-3, is 998 yards.

Each hole on the East and West has four tee positions to choose from: the minimum length of the East is 5,396 yards, and the West 5,379 yards. Tee times are arranged at 12-minute intervals to ensure free-flowing play, and each day one of the courses will be dedicated to two-ball play only. Golfers can choose between electric caddy-carts or hand-drawn trolleys; a caddy programme will be introduced at a later stage.

Practice facilities are every bit as excellent as the courses and include a double-ended driving range with 80-yard wide tees providing the perfect hitting direction away from the sun. Other practice facilities include three chipping and putting greens and three bunkers. Complimentary golf balls are provided for practising.

The clubhouse, built around a small piazza, houses a pro shop which sells equipment and clothing from luxury golf brands; a restaurant and bar overlooking one of the 18th holes; male and female changing rooms with showers and lockers; and a gelateria. Clubs, trolleys and carts can be rented, and complimentary club and shoe cleaning and bag storage will be part of the very personal, ‘private club’ service that visitors will enjoy here.

Below expectations

West Course Par 70,5.945 meters from yellow tees, Not much to say about the first 13 holes, they are relatively uninspiring, the last 5 holes much more interesting as they run along the beach.
#14 very good hole.
Greens fast, some quite undulating.
Golf cart a bit run down, windshield cracked in the upper part, GPS time still on wintertime.
Ball washer no water.
Cart fee is a steep €60..
Make sure you play in the morning because in the afternoon the wind gets stronger and stronger

East Course Par 73,6.009 meters from the yellow tees.
The East Course is the more interesting course at Verdura resort.
Wide fairways, not much rough.
Very fast and undulating greens.
At some holes water comes into play.
Not a very difficult course.
Some holes along the coast, offering nice views. Especially nice is the #13, a short par 3, where you can find a large stone and a bench with a great view over the sea. Aptly called a magnificent place.
Around the greens not very well maintained Bunkers of varying quality, some with a lot of sand, some with hardly any sand.
You can either walk or ride the course. Cart fee is a steep €60.
Make sure you play in the morning because in the afternoon the wind gets stronger and stronger.

Short Course Short Par 3-course. 9 holes, between 44 and 146 meters. All in all 1.676 meters. Good for practice.
Quality, however, was bad. Greens in very bad shape, no proper fairways just some meadows. Some debris around the tee boxes.
Course looks and feels quite run down.
Green fee: €30, trolley €5

Golf by the Mediterranean

Wonderful East Course in Verdura! I played on 2nd January, on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The assistance at the pro-shop was first-class: my wife didn't want to play and we wanted to walk, OK for her to walk with me, no need to take a cart. Single player? Welcome, no nonsense of pairing you with anyone else. I wanted to play after lunch: they gave me a one o'clock tee-time, just perfect to grab a bite at the buffet snack by the caddy master's. The description is accurate: they open up space so that you don't bump into the players ahead of you and the players behind have also plenty of room. I didn't have to wait a second until hole 16. And even then the pace was good. The course is spectacular, with two loops that either descend towards the sea or play along the coast. The fairways are in excellent condition and the greens are above average. The West Course runs parallel and across, but good signs all along and white flags for East and read for West avoid any confusion. A brilliant day of golf on a great location!

Something between 3 & 4 stars

I was playing in april 2014, here on east Course. It is not so hard. It is a little bit spectacular, but is very well maintained and the fairways and greens are adorable. The training area is super, the persons are very politely, but for instance... pro shop is very poor, the restaurant is extremely low (only a cold buffet) . It is very well signalized, from SS 115...
No return, all SICILY is very poor and dissapointing from PALERMO to SCIACCA, from TRAPANI to CATANIA.
The weather could be the only advantage of this area...
An off - topic : I was trying to play in PALERMO but I was astonished to hear that monday the golf Course is CLOSED!
Unbelievable (of course wasn't any holiday, or something...) , it was just CLOSED!
