Golf Club Colline del Gavi

Località Fara Nuova, 7, I-15060 Tassarolo, Italy

Characteristics

Asportive course, which appeals to both beginners and advanced golfers likewise. The fairways sidle through forests and hills, little creeks and lakes form natural water hazards.

Challenging

There is no doubt that this is a challenging course. Natural obstacles creates intrigues sought after. Sometimes fairways are not in the best shapes, many times due to wild boares. Overall an experience to be made.

Yellow/Blue - beautiful and tricky in places

Reception was very friendly, they spoke English and French.
Each hole is hilly, just as the entire course is hilly; carts are widely used.
The course is in good condition, although the fairways have a lot of weeds and the semi-rough is quite high, making it difficult to find the ball. We were told that this is normal in the region.

What was annoying, however, was that we weren't given anything to eat or drink after the round, as the only restaurant available was the one that didn't open until 8pm! We returned to the car with growling stomachs! There was nothing around either.

Solid parkland

Played mid-April 2024, HCP 16

We played the course combination "Giallo / Blu". Very open, slightly hilly parkland - hardly any trees to interfere with the game. "Giallo" (Lago) offers a lot of water - large ponds to the right and left, but also lots of ditches that meander across the FWs. "Blu" (Castello) is much "drier".

The landscape is quite nice, but there are no notable highlights such as spectacular mountains or sea views. Unfortunately, some overland power lines often spoil the look.

The course is far away from busy roads or other sources of noise - however, noise from busy greenkeepers is to be expected. However, this is also rewarded with very well-maintained greens, fairways and tees.

The quality of the bunkers is in stark contrast to this - there is far too little loose sand, and it often feels like playing on concrete. Urgent need for maintenance!

The semi-rough is also really bad - even right next to the fairway you have to search for the ball, as you would elsewhere only in the deep hard rough. If you find the ball, it is usually playable, only rarely can you just hack it out.

The courses are quite varied, there are some spectacular (difficult) holes. In general, the greatest difficulty lies in the combination of length (approx. 6,100 from the regular yellow tees) and the horrible (semi-) rough. On “Lago” you are also often faced with tricky strategic decisions - overcome a water hazard with a killer shot, or is it better to “just” lay up (?).

The greens are not overly fast - moderately undulating, often "two-tiered", i.e. with a larger wave in the putting area.

The paths between the courses are not too long, but there are a few ups and downs - if you don't like it too sporty, it's better to take a cart.

Worth mentioning is the very friendly and competent reception in the secretariat with good instructions for first-time players with all the necessary information (where to find the cart, range, 1st tee, changing rooms, etc.).

Weak, however: Between 14:00 and 19:30 the restaurant only offers drinks and dry white bread with cooked ham and cheese.

NB: We were also booked for the third 9 holes "Rosso" (Old Course) for our second round. However, the secretary advised us against it and we were allowed to play "Giallo/Blu" again. The "Old Course" turned out to be a very short course (2,325m, 6* Par4,3* Par3, no Par5). As far as we could see, the fairways are very close together, the whole course seemed more brown than green and hardly bigger than a decent football stadium (you can see the whole thing in one glance).

Conclusion: In the combination “Giallo / Blu” a solid course that you can play, but don’t necessarily have to. A good 3 stars (In the “Golf Bear Ranking”: 6 out of 10 points.)
