At the end of September, we were able to play the course in excellent condition. The starter provided useful tips, including the "free" score saver and a special pitchfork with an integrated bottle opener.
The front 9 runs along the seafront up to hole 1, before returning to the back 9. In other words, we primarily had a tailwind and then a headwind, which at times had a significant impact on our play. The greens were very fast, sometimes tricky due to the undulations.
Overall, a great course rich in tradition that is worth playing (but if you want to include more dunes in your game, you should play Royal St. George's instead; or simply play both links courses).

A links course as it appears in golfers picture book! A sharp, minimum 2-iron-more-or-less wind blows off the sea across the rock-hard, undulating fairways that lead from bunker to bunker. These are filled with the finest sand and play excellently! Nevertheless, it is often a challenge to somehow get out again - no wonder at depths of over 2m. You stand in, can't peek out anymore...
The rough is also deep - if you're deep in it, you have hardly any clue as to where exactly and often don't find the ball again. If it does, however, you can usually play it out again surprisingly well. That's quite fair - in contrast to some "blind" shots, where the fairway disappears behind the dunes, so that the fairway is hardly visible and the obstacles are not at all.
Also watch out for the water hazards. You don't count on it, but at 1 and 18, for example, there are ditches across the track that are difficult to see. The sea is generally out of reach, there are no larger ponds or lakes.
Surprisingly, the greens are also rock hard (hardly any pitch marks), but still quite moderate in terms of speed. As with the entire facility, the condition is excellent. That's how it should be with the green fee (> 200 British pounds).
Carts are only available with a timely reservation and on presentation of a medical certificate! However, the facility is relatively flat and the distances between the tracks are short. The only thing that makes it strenuous is the wind...
DANGER! Style and tradition are important here. If you want to play in shorts, you can do so - but must wear knee-high socks - short socks are not allowed. If required, the stockings can be purchased in the well-stocked pro shop - at prices that my flight partners concerned have refused any information about...
At tee 1, a starter tells short anecdotes and then clears the course for the tee. The right border immediately invites you to a slice in the clubhouse.
A friendly marshal points out the halfway hut after hole 9 – and at the same time, if necessary, discreetly hints that the game speed is not exactly the highest, but that you should still have fun...
We did too - at least as long as the wind came from behind (lanes 2 - 10), with a headwind (lanes 1 and 11 - 18) you realize again that you can't suddenly swing about 50 to 100m further than used.
Conclusion: whether the amount of the green fee is a short and hard swallow - but definitely play anyway! Solid 4 stars - a friendly, yet challenging links course that not too many exist. (In the "Golf Bear Ranking": 8 out of 10 points.)
