A truly heavenly links course

Played mid-June 2025, HCP 17

A wonderful links course, perched high on the cliffs "in the sky," offering sweeping views of the beach and a picturesque old castle ruin in the middle of the course. This seems to be a tourist attraction, even though not much of the castle remains – in any case, non-golfers occasionally wander right across the course, disregarding the players or their own safety.

Apart from the occasional whistling wind, it is wonderfully quiet – you can’t hear any cars, planes or steamers.

The fairways are designed with variety, even if the theme is mostly: don't hit the rough! And especially not the pot bunkers!
Unfortunately, this can't always be avoided – on the rock-hard fairways, balls sometimes seem to run forever (and are then often caught by one of the pots). The sand is playable, but in unfortunate situations, getting out of it can sometimes be quite difficult. A few blind shots further complicate the game – but there are very few of them, and the course behind the dunes is quite fair.

The greens are moderately fast and equally undulating – sometimes not even that big.

To compensate for the above challenges, at least there are no water hazards.

Anyone expecting a lush, even green carpet of grass is fundamentally wrong on links courses. The fairways boast every shade of brown, yellow, and green available, yet are consistently playable – the entire course is very well maintained.

Using a cart is recommended. The hard surface isn't exactly good for your ligaments and joints, and even with a cart, you'll still often find yourself crawling up and down dunes or traversing tough rough in search of that damn marble.

Conclusion: A truly beautiful links course – challenging to play, with a beautiful landscape and very well-maintained condition. Not exactly a bargain (green fee around €150) – but still a solid 4 stars! (In the "Golf Bear Ranking": 8 out of 10 points.)

True Links

We played this links course with 4 people on August 26,2024. The weather was cloudy and light rain.
Since we were playing one day after the club championships, the course had to be in top condition.

The layout is sensational, both the fairways and the greens are very undulating.
Amazing views of the sea from almost all of the fairways. The problem was the lack of information boards for the fairways, as some shots were blind and there wasn't always a helpful target post.
The fairways were playable, not too short/hard - and rather soft due to the wet weather. The greens were rather slow, which is unusual for a links course, but very true to the line.
The people in the clubhouse were extremely helpful and friendly.
Having played almost 100 golf courses all over the world, mainly in Germany of course, but also a lot on the island, this course is one of my TOP 5 courses!!!
The other 4 in this (subjective) ranking are: Royal Dornoch/SCO, GC Föhr/D, West Cliffs/POR, Golf Dinard/FRA and Nordwijk/NED possibly St. Mellion/ENG or Fortrose & Rosemarkie/SCO.
Not included, for example, Budersand/Sylt or Le Tourquet/FRA, which ultimately shows how much I liked "Pennard" overall.
I would definitely recommend it, even in terms of price (80 francs on Mondays).

Nice place but actually not recommended

Very nice, very wavy / hilly links course with a wonderful view of the coast. very challenging to play. as far as the positive.

Unfortunately there is also a long list of defects:
fairways mediocre at best - mowed short (if the lawn has it) and rock hard - constant improvement was the order of the day. the ball therefore easily rolls another 50 meters in all possible directions. precision golf (which is necessary here) = non-existent

Greens nicely undulated and fast, but we often played on the sand rather than on the lawn, which was a maximum of 2 mm high.

A very big shortcoming are the non-existent track descriptions (with a green fee of £125). You play at least half of the holes BLIND and when you hit the tee you have no idea whether it continues straight behind the hill, down to the right or down to the left. basically means running a hundred meters ahead and checking. and because the ball also rolls in an uncontrolled manner in undulating terrain, searching for the ball for a long time is a constant.
It also happened twice that you couldn't see the flag (from the fairway) even 80 meters in front of the green.

this is still exciting: it has very deep bunkers with good sand. But if the bunker is so small that when you stand in the hole there is hardly any room left for the swing... then the architect had a weak moment... and as a player you just declare the ball unplayable :- D

19th hole, quite an acceptable restaurant.
