Characteristics
A great wee seaside links course with amazing views out to the Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth.
The weather is particularly clement in East Lothian, Dunbar’s annual rainfall is 24 ins. (60cm) and the towns proud boast is that of sunshine capital of Scotland. However when the bar breeze blows and the prevalent south westerlies often do this, quite often Winterfield becomes a true test of Golf.
In mitigation the trees at Belhaven School and the Promenade wall do offer some protection. The golf course has seldom, if ever, been closed because of frost/snow. Therefore one is guaranteed a feast of golf all year round.
All in all if you enjoy a test of golf on a links course steeped in history that is more a walk than a hike, then Winterfield Golf Course merits more than a cursory glance.

"Nice", very simple place
3.0 of 5 starsReviewed June 4, 2026
There are no major challenges on this course. The wind might be a significant factor, though. We (handicaps 9 and 11) played it in rainy weather and wouldn't travel too far to play here. But if you happen to be in the area, it's certainly worth considering.
The course is neither challenging in terms of length nor design. The relatively few bunkers (some of them Scottish-style deep) hardly affect the game. Nevertheless, a round here can be enjoyable.
Positive factors:
The welcome at the clubhouse was very friendly, and we felt comfortable in the restaurant after our round as well. The price-performance ratio is excellent – especially thanks to the very reasonable green fee of £45 on weekdays. Furthermore, the tees, fairways, and greens were in good condition. And: you can easily complete a round of the course in 3 hours – fantastic!
Negative factors:
The walkers significantly disrupted the flow of play on several holes. Golfers are supposed to have priority (there are very clear signs), but the walkers didn't seem to care during our visit. Whether a lack of difficulty should be considered a negative is certainly debatable. Personally, I would have welcomed a few challenges.

Great links course

The first hole in particular through a hollow and back up to the green is a bit challenging, but otherwise a relatively easy course with varied beautiful views of the rocky coast on the one hand and the wide sandy bay on the other. Moderate green fee. A worthwhile place

Worth every pound.

I can only agree with the assessment of reiner2304 from 2019. Everything is very well described there. Space is underestimated in my opinion. Green fee was £34 on Sunday and is a bargain for what is on offer.
