Pure view

Played on June 29,2026. The 18-hole North Berwick East Link Course at Glen Golf Club is located approximately 28 miles or a 50-minute drive east of Edinburgh city center, right on the seafront, specifically Edinburgh Bay. First and foremost: every one of the 18 holes offers fantastic views of the sea and the iconic Bass Rock. The club is part of the North Berwick parish, which has hosted one of its Rolex Series Top European Tour professional tournaments for several years. This course is a must-play if you're in the area. Situated above the cliffs, the course features some ups and downs, though it's not a particularly strenuous climb. A golf cart is recommended for less athletic golfers, but walking is definitely the best way to enjoy the ambiance. Even on the 1st hole, the tee shot takes you up onto the cliffs. On the 18th, the tee shot requires a downhill run towards the clubhouse. A slice could endanger the cars parked on the beach road. After nine holes, you're at the other end of the course, not back at the clubhouse. There's no halfway house or driving range (just a toilet with an access code at the 9th tee). The tee shot on the 9th hole (par 3) dips down into the valley again. The signal hole is the 13th (also par 3). Here, too, you tee off into the valley, with the sea to your right and the green only partially visible. Therefore, it's recommended that your playing partner (s) walk a little ahead and see where their ball lands after the tee shot. In windy conditions, this becomes an absolute challenge. You'll frequently catch glimpses of the famous Bass Rock – don't forget your camera! Almost every hole has its own challenge, and the pot bunkers create a true links feel, even though it's not a flat meadow and the typical dunes are absent. Nevertheless, it never gets boring. If you don't stray too far, you'll find your balls again in the high but usually thin rough. There are no true water hazards. Higher handicaps are recommended to use the blue front tees. The red ladies' tees are usually only 3 to 5 meters in front of the yellow men's tees, making the course slightly longer for women. Men's par 70/ladies' par 73. There are only two par 5 holes for men, one of which is rated as the easiest and one as the most difficult. The fairways and greens were in impeccable condition. The greens were true, fast, and not too undulating. A few tee boxes were a bit worn, but you could always find a spot for your tee shot. Play was manageable on a Monday afternoon. There were mostly two-person groups and single players. Tee times can be booked via the website, but you have to pay for them immediately. The green fee is a reasonable £100 from Monday to Thursday. After 3 pm, it's £80. From Friday to Sunday, it's more expensive at £135, or £105 after 3 pm. Trolleys cost 8 GBP. Tee times are available at short notice in the afternoon. The pro shop employee was friendly. The clubhouse with its restaurant (which we didn't use) is, according to the sign, only 20 years old, but it looks older. There's a putting green in front of the clubhouse; we didn't see any other practice facilities. There are two nets at the first tee for practicing drives. Overall, it was a great experience to play here. Unlike the prestigious clubs in the area such as North Berwick, Renaissance, Muirfield, and Archerfield, here you can enjoy a relaxed game with fantastic views for a relatively small fee.

Awesome view

Here, too, at our most expensive golf course of this holiday (£90 regular, £70 after 3 p.m., weekdays), we arrived with high expectations, and they were not disappointed. However, the drought has left its mark on one or two of the holes. The greens, however, were all very good and quite challenging. The layout is appealing; losing a ball is difficult unless you hit it far off course. And the eye-catcher is definitely Bass Rock, which seems to be from another world off the coast and is clearly visible from almost every hole.

The signature hole here is the 13th, where you play the ball blind, practically down to the beach. It's a bit odd, but I found the 12th almost nicer, as you play directly toward Bass Rock. And personally, I remember the 15th, where I beat my personal longest drive by a whopping 65 meters, which was, of course, largely due to the tailwind. But when you land on the green with a 7-iron on your second shot on a par 5, you almost feel like Rory McIlroy, even though the truth couldn't be further from the truth.

Even if the clubhouse isn't exactly the jewel of the resort, the course is always worth a visit. A real cinematic experience—a cinematic experience for the mind.

Unforgettable round of golf

We played the Glen in September 2023 and enjoyed every hole!
The staff were very friendly and the prices were quite fair at £65 on weekdays. The old clubhouse has its special charm and you can feel Scottish golf tradition everywhere.
Unfortunately, due to the dry summer, the fairways were almost brown and extremely hard. You have to read the tracks carefully and always take the wind into account. Pure links golf! The greens were fast, well maintained and beyond criticism. Occasionally hikers get lost from the coastal path onto the seafront tracks and you should always exercise some caution before striking out.
There are some spectacular holes, in particular 2 sensationally laid out par 3s right on the cliffs. You really can't get enough of the view of the sea and the rocks in front of it. Unfortunately, time on the course passes far too quickly.
Conclusion: You should definitely play The Glen.
