Characteristics

Located on the remote Solway Coast near Dumfries, Southerness Golf Club offers a pure championship links experience. Designed by MacKenzie Ross in 1947, the course is defined by its flat, easily walkable terrain that demands strategic precision rather than physical exertion. Players enjoy panoramic views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District, often battling the coastal winds. The landscape is dominated by the iconic 18th-century lighthouse, while the clubhouse provides a relaxing atmosphere to unwind.

Links golf at its best

I was member of Southerness for nearly 30 years though I live overseas. I have never tired of Southerness. It is a real test. Beware of this course in the wind (Par is 3 less than SSS) There are 3 starting par 4's mostly against the wind and if you can play 3 pars against the wind from the whites then you are on form.
It all looks easy but there are bumps and undulations which will take your ball where you don't want it. In the last few years the course is in perfect PREFECT condition, (How they do it is beyond me) All the par 3's are testing. The par 4 12th is one of the best golf holes in the world and ends with a beautiful view up the Solway coast.
Play this course on a sunny summer evenig and you will know what heaven is like.
You really only need to book in the morning and early afternoon.
Pace of play is fast - Thank God.

Typical Links Course

A real challenge. Now in August, it's difficult to keep the ball on the fairways. The entire course is flat but offers beautiful views. The greens are difficult to play, as they are very hilly. It requires good course management. The course offers a maximum links feel; I would be happy to play it again.
