Located at the beginning of the famous Scotland’s Golf Coast Royal Musselburgh GC is a stunning example of its architect James Braids work. Not only does the club boast an 18 hole course but also a 300 yard plus driving range, short game area and six hole short game course. Nestled in the East Lothian Countryside with the 22 other Golf Coast courses Royal Musselburgh is steeped in history dating back to 1774. This is a club oozing tradition but one which is embracing all that the modern game has to offer

Parkland with tradition
4.0 of 5 starsReviewed July 5, 2026
Played on July 3,2026. The 18-hole course, which according to its website is the 6th oldest golf course in the world, is located approximately 12 miles or a 30-minute drive east of Edinburgh city center. The 100% parkland course is nestled within a former park surrounded by a historic wall. We encountered a deer during our round. The sea isn't far away, but you can't see it. The imposing, former castle-like manor house serves as the clubhouse. It can be booked for events and weddings. According to the website, breakfast, and depending on the weather, lunch and dinner are offered (we didn't use them). The manor house is impressive, but why they built an ugly gray concrete block next to it to house the pro shop is beyond me. At least the young man at the counter was friendly and explained a bit about the course to us. The course is a typical parkland course with tall trees on either side of the fairways, without the fairways becoming too narrow. The course features gentle ups and downs without being particularly hilly. The fairways are mostly straight and often undulating. Several bunkers, some with high edges, need to be avoided. There are no true water hazards. The greens are well-maintained, as is the entire course – not too fast, but true. It was noticeable that there was quite a bit of litter on and beside the fairways. The course plays as a par 70 for men and a par 73 for women from the front of the three available tee boxes. Separate handicaps apply for men and women, which are shown on the tee boards and scorecard. The layout brings you back to the clubhouse after two holes and again near it after holes 6 and 8. After the 13th, you can optionally switch to the 18th to shorten your round. Hole 12 is somewhat unusual. Here, women tee off over the fairway of the 11th. Furthermore, holes 11 and 12 share at least part of the fairway. This means caution is advised when encountering oncoming groups. There's a toilet on the back nine, but it can only be accessed with a PIN code. You can refill your water at one or two drinking fountains. The course was quite busy on a Friday afternoon around 5 pm. Several foursomes were out, but the pace of play was still good. You can book a tee time online via the website, but you have to pay immediately. The price decreases depending on the day of the week and the later in the day. We paid a reasonable 60 GBP plus 5 GBP for a trolley rental. Tee times are allocated in 8-minute intervals. The club seems to rely more on its members than on visiting players. During our round, we encountered several younger players. If you enjoy parkland golf with a rich tradition, this is the place for you.

We played the course on the Albrecht Führer on July 9,2024 (90 pounds for 2 people).
It is a beautifully designed parkland course that is celebrating its 250th anniversary.
Fairways, cuts and greens were flawless. The clubhouse is an eye-catcher from the outside. One or two pieces inside seem to date back to the founding phase.
I would play the course again.
