Good spot by the sea

Played on July 1,2026. The 18-hole course is located 15 miles east of Edinburgh's city center, separated only by the coastal road, directly on the sea. However, the sea isn't truly visible until the 11th hole. After eight holes, you're at the other end of the course, and the clubhouse isn't accessible again until after the 12th green. A PIN code is required for the only toilet, located after the 10th (ask for it at the pro shop). The fairways are predominantly flat and almost all very open, so even higher handicappers should be able to manage. Stray balls should be easy to find, as the rough is generally not high and rather thin. The main challenge is the pot bunkers, which provide excellent protection for the greens. On the back nine, two small streams running across the fairways come into play, but these shouldn't pose a problem. At par 68 and without a single par 5, the course isn't particularly long for men. The ladies play the course with a par of 73 and five par 5s, which is quite unusual. The red tees are often right next to the yellows or even behind them. Few holes are truly memorable; if anything, the par 3s, some with slightly elevated tees, are the most memorable. Holes 7 through 10 require crossing a road. This part of the course feels more like parkland than links. The greens and bunkers were in excellent condition. However, the fairways were, to put it mildly, not worth the money—very uneven and with many bare patches. Some of the tee boxes were also worn. The course was quiet on a Wednesday afternoon. We had booked a 2 p.m. tee time online and didn't encounter any queues or have anyone directly behind us. The two of us finished our round in three hours. The friendly pro shop employee even let us tee off a little early. The pro shop isn't in the clubhouse but right next to the first tee. The green fee varies depending on the day of the week and time of day. It's cheaper after 1 p.m. if you book and pay online immediately. The standard green fee is far too high considering the current condition of the fairways. There are better and more spectacular courses in the region. Incidentally, we booked a holiday home at the edge of the 18th fairway. There are a few nice villas here, as well as at the edge of the first hole and along holes 1 through 18, but they aren't bothersome. There's no driving range, but there is a chipping range and a putting green next to the venerable clubhouse. A few balls from the chipping range tend to land on the fairway of the first hole. The clubhouse, whose interior is a bit dated, offers food and even breakfast (which we didn't use). An official path/trail from the town to the sea runs right through the fairways of holes 14 and 18, so you have to be a little careful of pedestrians. You can certainly play a round at Longniddry, but it's not a must-do. It tends towards being a 4-star course, but due to the poor fairways, it only gets 3 stars.
