Real Club La Moraleja is one of Spain’s most important clubs. It is the largest Spanish golf club for its number of its holes and the largest in Europe located in a metropolitan area. Founded in 1973, it currently has four 18-hole golf courses, all rated par 72, designed by Jack Nicklaus. It also contains a 9-hole short course, 8 tennis courts, 12 paddle tennis courts, 2 squash courts, one covered and three open-air swimming pools, a gym and a spa. Added to these are two clubhouses, a children’s chalet and a tennis clubhouse (on 1 and 2 courses), plus a prebuilt modular clubhouse for courses 3 and 4. Courses 1 and 2 are located at La Moraleja residential estate (Alcobendas, Madrid). Courses 3 and 4 are located in the municipality of Algete. It has 6,000 shareholder members. In 2013 it was voted the best golf course in Spain by Deporte & Business and in 2014, La Moraleja 3 was voted the second best golf course in Spain by the American magazine Golf Digest. The Club has hosted competitions such as the World Cup of Golf, the Spanish Open or the Paddle Tennis World Championship.

Until 2010, the prestigious Real Golf La Moraleja, with its two Jack Nicklaus courses, was a purely private members' club! In 2013, Golf La Moraleja opened two more Nicklaus-designed courses, Nos. 3 and 4! Since the two new courses (No. 3, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, and No. 4, built by Nicklaus Design) consistently rank in the top 15 of all golf course rankings in Spain, and all four courses at Real La Moraleja are now open to guests, it was clear to me that we had to play the two new courses at Real La Moraleja on our trip to Madrid.
I simply cannot understand the high ratings and descriptions! I've played about 30 Nicklaus Design or Signature Courses so far. I was very disappointed with Moraleja! Both courses are located in a completely flat area. Of course, Nicklaus moved the earth, raised some greens, and filled all 36 holes with bunkers, which is perfectly fine.
No. 3:
It should be a well-maintained and easily playable parkland course.
The place is very well maintained.
But it simply lacks the tall and sufficient trees needed for a parkland course. Furthermore, everything is "grass green," meaning it's been meticulously irrigated, and somehow this creates a rather monotonous German country feel…! Deciduous trees instead of pines, thick green grass instead of thin grass with sandy patches.
No. 3: is a good, solid golf course, unspectacular and sometimes a bit monotonous.
No. 4: is significantly more difficult to play due to longer rough and a large fringed bunker.
But here too, the lush green grass doesn't match the bunkers.
Even on this course, from which I expected more, parts of it feel monotonous! Holes 1,2, and 4 are so similar that on the 4th tee we thought we were back on the 1st!
The green fee is on par with Sunningdale and Castle Stuart. It's completely disproportionate, even for a private course! The holes themselves have little to no memorable appeal, and neither course will make my top 50 Spanish ranking!
If I, as a wealthy club with certainly some private investors on top, am having a 36-hole resort built today, then it must be state-of-the-art!
18-hole inland links (Winston Links or Sand Links) with pot bunkers or a desert style course and a spectacular 18-hole park championship course with fringed bunkers and lots and lots of open water.
Such a design would somehow justify this mega green fee.
I've seen so many things Nicklaus is capable of... there are no limits.
Therefore, I can only recommend that everyone invest the same green fee in either the RSHECC or the Villa de Madrid Club de Campo!
The 4 stars are awarded for the entire package, including the pro shop and the extremely high maintenance standards, especially on the greens!
P.S.: Buggy and packed lunch with drinks are included in the fee.
On No. 4 we were only allowed to use the cart, which on large design courses means sometimes walking 250m across the huge fairways with 3-4 clubs under your arm.
It's better and faster without a buggy.
