Characteristics
Set in the dunes of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides, The Machrie Links course is one of the most beautiful locations in world golf. Originally designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell, the course has now been fully modernised by D J Russell, the former European Ryder Cup Vice Captain and PGA tour player.
There is a reason why the Scots invented golf on links land, Machrie land, and the links turf on which the course sits is among the finest in Scotland. The dramatic setting of Laggan Bay and the sand dunes has few equals, and with the ever-changing nature of the challenge offered by this acclaimed layout on the West Coast.
Opened in September 2018 after a complete renovation and expansion, The Machrie Hotel offers 47 beautifully designed rooms, suites and lodges, the Hotel offers visitors many places to meet and relax including 18, our impressive restaurant with panoramic views of the Links, as well as a PureGray Spa.
Whether you’re just looking to explore this stunning island, home to some of the world’s finest whiskies, birdlife, seafood and dramatic coastal seascapes, or you’re taking on the challenge of our championship links course, it’s time you played the Machrie!

With panoramic views of the 18th green and the ocean beyond, 18 is our stunning restaurant & bar. Our Lounges are perfect to relax with a drink from the bar or enjoy afternoon tea with friends.
We source local and regional produce, featuring ingredients farmed, caught or bred in Scotland. From farm to fishery to fork, we trace the provenance of our food, focusing on fresh seasonal supplies.
Our enthusiasm for Scottish produce extends to our Bar, which displays a fine selection of local Islay malts. Our knowledgeable barmen also serve locally distilled gin with a selection of perfect serves. Beer drinkers can sip Scottish too, as we stock some local ales as well as international favourites.

This is not a nice golf course
1.0 of 5 starsReviewed June 16, 2018
Short, tight place without any highlights. At hole 2 you have to look for the flag with the looker... and the 9, across the street, is also a pointless golf hole.
Resume: every pound green fee is one too many

Beautiful place, not only now
1.0 of 5 starsReviewed April 18, 2015
Were there yesterday for the second time after 2010, fantastic weather, have played and were a bit sour. Full Twilight green fee, no one says anything. And what can we expect? A construction site. The square is the degree rebuilt, sometimes no tea box, deduction from the fairway or white with red, an awful lot of GUR, new tee boxes elsewhere, Games direction markers have not been updated, no clues as to where it goes, greens laid on the fairway, par 4 and 5 in some par 3 and 4, etc.
Here comes despite the brilliant weather and the great location, no joy. Only the top greens (except those on the fairway) have convinced. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2018 again, probably the place is then again in a worthwhile state. Who wants to play a real top-ranked in the region, which was recommended Machrihanish Dunes.

A dream!
5.0 of 5 starsReviewed July 7, 2014
One feels at the end of the world and finds a perfect links course, wonderfully maintained and very varied. Each hole is different, many strokes are blind. It is a place that demands an intelligent vorausschaundes and accurate play. Who skin just it, the ball will never see again.
The current infrastructure is non-existent, the hotel is closed, no cafe, not a restaurant, but it is perhaps because so wild and unique, in a vast marshland in the dunes. If you visit Islay to see the distillery, it is worthwhile to place a couple of times to play, it is never boring.
