Characteristics

Established in 1927, Golf Club d'Hossegor is frequently ranked among the finest courses in Europe. Designed by Arnaud Massy and John Morrison, the layout combines a typical British design with a stunning Landes forest setting. Protected from coastal winds by pines and cork oaks, the sandy soil ensures excellent playing conditions year-round. Updated by Cabell Robinson in 2003 to meet modern standards, the course is known for nurturing champions like Jean Van de Velde. The experience is completed by a classic clubhouse and a restaurant overlooking the greens.

Member-oriented parkland without highlights

Played on September 26th, 2024. The predominantly flat 18-hole course is located about 40 km north of Biarritz in a wooded, upscale residential area. Around the parkland fairways with tall trees you can see beautiful villas, but they don't bother you. The fairways have no real highlights and mostly go straight. There are hardly any real water hazards. But there are some very large and well-placed bunkers. Heather has grown in front of some tees, but it shouldn't be a problem to tee off over them. The condition was good overall, especially the greens were true, although rather soft on a rainy day. The venerable club is more member-oriented. The parking lot directly in front of the clubhouse is of course only for members. But you can park directly on the street in front of the club. The clubhouse and especially the sanitary facilities are rather rustic. There is also a restaurant, which I didn't use. There are no toilets on the course. Guests cannot book tee times online. I had written an email and then received a tee time, but was supposed to pay the green fee in advance. Then I saw that the club was taking part in the "Landes Golf Pass" green fee campaign with a 10% discount. For whatever reason, however, you could only book tee times after 7 p.m. I pointed this out by email. Then I was able to book online at short notice, but didn't do it straight away. After three days, the booking option had disappeared again. I wrote two more emails but received no more replies. On a slightly rainy afternoon, I spontaneously decided to play in Hossegor. I then received an immediate tee time from the friendly employee in the office. For a whopping €110 (making it the most expensive club in the region) plus €5 for a good manual trolley, I went on the round alone. The tee times are displayed on a screen at the starter's house. Play was rather poor due to the weather. The member assigned to me didn't show up either. What the friendly receptionist didn't tell me was that you had to tee off from mats on all four PAR3 holes. All four tee colors were pinned to one mat. After playing three holes, I came across a four-man flight of members. They made no attempt to let me through. Fortunately, the four of them finished their round after 10 holes. You have to know that green 10, and not green 9, ends at the clubhouse. Due to the experiences, the rather monotonous holes and the excessive green fee, unfortunately only 3 stars. You can play Hossegor if you are allowed to, but you don't have to.

Altehrwürdig

Very well maintained course. First-class fairways and greens. Easy to walk as they are mostly flat. The back 9 holes offer a little more variety in design. Otherwise, many courses are unrecognizable. The nature and the old trees and the many great properties of the venerable course are magnificent. Green fee on weekdays is an impressive €110 per person! (As of June 2024) We had a very nice flight and a lot of fun. But the Seignosse, Moliets and Chiberta courses impressed us more.

One of the best places in the region - typically Landes, typically forest.

The many places in the region are surprising. I didn't do all of them. The places in the north of Biarritz can all be reached via the autoroute in 30 minutes. Hossegor, Seignosse, Moliets (the Mitterand Platz) It takes a little longer in the departmental. Hossegor is something special. Very old, very English, very Landes with the forest. The landscape is impressive. Super fairways with first-class fairway-wood punch possibility. Some deceive of the difficulty. Bunkers are cleverly set. Nice dune sand. Precise game required. I was able to impress my low handicapper teammates with a better short game. One of the top places in the region. Again, don't trust online booking. Better just call. English also works. Well-stocked golf shop. Restaurant with Basque treats as a snack menu.
Overall good atmosphere and nice service right up to the starter.
