Characteristics
Situated in Dorset, Ferndown Golf Club offers a premier heathland experience established in 1913. The club features 27 holes, comprising the championship 18-hole "Old Course" and the 9-hole "Alliss Course," named after the legendary Peter Alliss who called this his favourite course. Ranked among the world's top courses, it has hosted prestigious events like the Women's British Open. The layout is renowned for its flat, easily walkable terrain, perfectly positioned bunkers, and tranquil setting amidst heather and pines. Classic English parkland GC. The terrain is slightly undulating to flat and the paths are lined with old pine trees. fairways good, greens quite ok, very big and fast. About 30% has nice undulations, the rest is flat, partly as a whole green in a slight slant.
The only challenge on this course are the many large, deep and well-placed sand bunkers. However, the sand is pretty bad, so the bunker game is very difficult or almost impossible.
You can play around the few small water hazards (small streams) because they are clearly visible.
There is no track description at all.
But it's also relatively unimportant, as a £175 green fee (weekdays) is supposed to prevent non-residents from visiting. The green fee is simply excessive for the golfing experience on offer.
