I have played the Abama course 4 times and each time more than 5 hours because they let so many beginners with hotel vouchers/ guest rates play.
And with these high greens fees waiting on each tee box forever. Never again…….

Although I largely agree with the rating from April 11th, 2024, I would still like to give it 5 stars because this is a course with many unique selling points and an outstanding layout. We played the course 3 times from April 23rd to 25th, 2024.
Rapid changes in altitude, carefully designed obstacles, biotopes, ponds and flower islands as well as fantastic views of the Atlantic and La Gomera make this difficult course (the most difficult we have played so far) a very special golfing experience. The HCP limits of 28 and 36 are absolutely justified, otherwise you would have to plan more than 4.5 hours for the 18 holes, as the slowest flight of 4 in the field sets the pace. This is a small downside, as this outstanding golf course is very busy. You have to get used to the lightning-fast greens and the ball can also roll quite far out of control. It's a shame about the minimalist restaurant in the clubhouse and the manageable chipping/putting greens and the practice options for bunker shots. Nevertheless, we definitely want to come back!

We played Abama for the first time yesterday in pleasant April temperatures. It is a beautiful golf course that was designed with great attention to detail and adapted to the existing topology.

The course is very demanding and the layout means you have to make a lot of "blind" shots. If you don't know the course, you're often at a loss. The electronic birdie book in the buggy helps you know where you are at all times. Great!
As a flight of two, we needed about 4:15. Unfortunately, we had to wait 3-5 minutes for almost every tee shot. On par-5 holes, you could clearly see that there were sometimes 4 flights on one hole because a few "dawdlers" weren't familiar with the hole or the use of a buggy. A marshal with a subtle hint would have been worth his weight in gold. There wasn't a marshal around all day.
The greens are as smooth as glass and barely playable. The flag positions are sometimes "outrageous" and unworthy of a greenkeeper. Often only one rake for 3-4 bunkers, and the green bunkers looked accordingly. Divots or pitch markers are not repaired by the players. This shows the big difference between a holiday golf resort and a golf club that relies on permanent members who maintain the course.

I regularly go to Tenerife with my wife to relax on this amazing island. With every stay we play at least 2x the ABAMA golf course, which is one of our absolute favourites. We have not yet played a more spectacular course (perhaps comparable to Monte Rei/Algarve in terms of fun). From hole 6 you can't help but be amazed at the inventiveness with which the holes were created here. One spectacular view follows the next. Certainly not a place for beginners. Everyone else should have played the course but times.
The (admittedly) very high green fee has the side effect that we have never seen the place overcrowded. The restaurant + pro shop are excellent and the staff there are incredibly welcoming. No trace of arrogance. The course itself is well maintained, as you would expect for this price.

Wow! Golf in paradise!

And although the place was fully booked with 4-flights (weekend), we were able to play the round quickly without really annoying waiting times. So our conclusion is all-round positive and the high green fee is worth it for so much perfection.
As a little fun, there were quite a few cheeky angry birds and a funny party company that got lost on the way to the cocktail party on the golf course.
And on top of that, there is an excellent restaurant at the clubhouse with a beautiful terrace for sundowners.

We know more than a dozen courses that were created or renovated under the direction of Dave Thomas in Spain, France, Germany and Scotland. This one here is also one of his best - in our opinion - but very demanding. The Englishman was a mining engineer by profession and a professional player in the 1950s, participated in the Ryder Cup several times, won over a dozen tournaments and was involved in over 150 golf courses - including several (40) top courses. In 2013 he died at the age of 79.
The view of the Atlantic and the island of Gomera is partly breathtaking and tries several times to weaken the concentration of the players. It has to be there, otherwise there will be a lot of work and lost balls.
It is a demanding course, also playful, the wind always wants to play along. The layout is convincing, keeps up with all modern courses, well designed. The most difficult thing was to lay it in the difficult terrain, which was very successful.

But we rarely had so much fun on a lap and were almost disappointed when we were done after about 4.5 hours of playing time.
