Hidden Gem

Woodlake Park Golf Club (5,930 yards, par 72, slope index 131 from the yellow tees) is located between Pontypool and Usk, on the edge of the water reservoir that supplies Cardiff, a good 45-minute drive away. The drive from Cardiff is straightforward, although the last few miles are practically single-lane. If a car is coming the other way, you simply pull into one of the lay-bys along the road – stress-free and friendly.
Then comes the entrance to the club grounds – surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery, the course feels pleasantly secluded, and the first fairways come into view.
The clubhouse has a modern yet very cozy feel and features a sun terrace overlooking the 18th hole and the adjacent lake. A
Within sight of the first tee, there are two driving cages and a practice area for the short game. The practice bunker is currently under construction, and the putting green is located by the clubhouse.
The first tee features a dogleg left to the green 338 yards away. Next up was hole 2, a short 273 yards, yet still a test, as it requires playing through a narrow, long alley. After the first two holes, it was clear what to expect on the course. The fairways are well laid out, but demand significantly more than one might initially expect. The mix of open holes and some narrower fairways provides plenty of variety. I particularly liked how well the course utilizes the existing landscape. Subtle changes in elevation constantly create interesting shots and different perspectives.
The fairways were in excellent condition during my visit, and the greens were definitely among the highlights of the round. Fast, true, and with enough movement to require concentration even on shorter putts. Add to that the bunkers, which were well-sanded and largely equipped with sod walls – the rest are currently being reconfigured.
The sides of the fairways were excellent in length; even on sloping terrain, the balls stopped and were very fair to play. From a playing perspective, the course demands a good balance between attack and caution. Playing boldly in the right places can lead to good scores. At the same time, there are plenty of holes where a conservative approach is often the better choice.
My signature hole would be the 16th. A beautiful par 3,184 yards long, with water in front and the lake on the left side of the green. It looks fantastic (taking pictures is highly recommended), and I was very glad to have landed safely on the edge of the green. If the wind picks up here, you're in for a treat.
After your round, a visit to the clubhouse or the terrace is definitely worthwhile. The relaxed atmosphere perfectly matches the character of the entire club.
All in all, a very well-maintained golf course (the boxes for broken tees help keep the tee boxes looking clean) with varied holes, excellent greens, and a relaxed atmosphere.
For me, an absolute hidden gem!
Wonderful views on a great course

Some stamina is required though a buggy is very good value.
The course runs by the side of, and overlooks LLandegfedd Resevoir. This provides a lovely backdrop.
The golf course has a number of interesting and testing holes, and all require some thinking.
The condition of the course is very good, the greens being excellent being both true and quick.
I have played at many courses in the UK during the last 30+ years, but I rate this course and recommend it.
