Founded in 1931 near Pulborough, West Sussex Golf Club offers one of the finest lowland heathland experiences in the British Isles. Designed by Hutchison, Campbell, and Hotchkin, the course is celebrated for its natural beauty, artistic bunkering, and heather-lined fairways. The club maintains a traditional ethos, primarily favouring two-ball play to ensure a smooth pace. Naturally, the fairways are dry and burnt out. A brief explanation: The heathland sand soil absorbs any rainfall immediately, and on this surface, unlike on real links courses, no complex drainage is necessary! The soil takes care of it! Therefore, this soil dries out much, much faster, turning slightly beige in midsummer!
The fairways are still mown short and thin, as they should be!
You should know that if you play these courses in midsummer!
West Sussex GC is one of the best heathland courses in Europe and is (deservedly) ranked between 5-15 in England in every golf course ranking!
The course is challenging, with some sections that are almost unrealistically beautiful! The members, staff, and managers were extremely friendly and helpful! Everything about this club is very British! White socks are no longer mandatory, but only two-ball is played!
That means either two or four players in the classic four-player format with only two balls on the court!
We split our group of 8 into four flights of 2!
The whole thing is just great!
The West Sussex course was absolutely superbly maintained and in top condition! These heath courses play like links courses in midsummer anyway!
West Sussex is worth every trip!

Place is nice, it was very dry (brown). Discounts not very well maintained, information such as billing panels and distance charges are entirely absent. Greens very good but tough. Clubhouse rather use. Alt could indeed be beautiful. Staff very friendly. Attention: "White socks duty".
