Parkland with tradition

Played on August 19th, 2021. The slightly hilly (cart not required) 18-hole course is located south-east of Liège, approx. 45 km from the German border and a few kilometers from the E42 motorway in the area of the municipality of Spa. Spa is known from the Formula 1 racetrack or as a recreational area where the water of the same name comes from. It is an absolute parkland course in absolute tranquility and nature with high ingrown trees. You can literally feel the tradition of the long-established club. There are a few signs on the way there, but a sat nav can't hurt. The first part of the driveway (probably a local road) to the club through the forest is heavily marked by potholes and the suspicion arises that this is probably wrong. Only the second part of the driveway is then wonderfully smoothly tarred and worthy of a club driveway. The 18 lanes are laid out like a real parkland course. Mostly relatively straight, few doglegs, few water hazards. Instead, there are some well-placed bunkers that keep coming back into play. Many of the bunker tongues are beautifully planted with heather. The challenge is to stay on the fairway. If you forgive the blows in the forest or the bushes, it is often hopeless to find the balls in the dense undergrowth. Some of the tees are a bit narrower due to the branches of the trees. The front tees are recommended for higher HC. At one or the other tee you have to stretch a little from yellow to cover the heather that is partially in front of the fairways. Why the place is rated relatively easy is not entirely clear to me, possibly because the PAR5 are relatively short. There are, for example, slightly raised tees on 13 and 15 that allow a beautiful view of the entire fairway. The really big highlights are a little missing from my point of view. The condition was basically good. The fairways were provided with a little foreign growth at one point or another, but otherwise great. The greens were okay, even if one or the other pitch mark was unfortunately not repaired. One or the other tee was tightly set and unfortunately a little worn out. The paths from the tee to the fairway were a bit uneven, bumpy and rather suboptimal for the requirements of the facility. But none of this is a drama, just not quite royal! There are three sizable buildings on the property. First the secretariat with pro shop, then the restaurant with sanitary facilities (no toilets on the square) and a building for the caddy master. The restaurant looks classy and the large terrace is above the 9th green. The 18 ends somewhat unspectacularly on the other side of the street, next to the 10th tee. The employee in the secretariat was friendly and explained everything to me. The green fee is staggered according to the season and day of the week. Mondays are cheapest. During the week you pay € 85 in the high season or € 95 on the weekend. That is a proud price and at the absolute limit for the system. Possibly also a small defensive price so that not too many guests come. However, from 5 p.m. there is a sundowner for € 50. During my game, hole 6 (PAR 3) was still closed due to a renovation. I was told that in the secretariat too. Still full price! To compensate for this, lane 12 (actually a PAR 5) was quickly divided into a PAR 4 and a PAR 3 and a provisional paper score card was issued. Incidentally, range balls are included in the price as much as wanted. Unfortunately, discounts on the range only from mats. And you can take a bottle of water from the fridge free of charge at discount 1. The tee times from 10 to 13 are reserved for members. Otherwise guests are generally welcome. The game on a Thursday afternoon was quite brisk despite a light but constant drizzle. Most of the members I met gave friendly greetings. I ran into a four-man flight twice and was let through quite quickly as a single player. A few days before my game, I asked for a start time by email and received a confirmation of the time I wanted relatively quickly. Anyone who loves parkland golf on venerable courses is not wrong here

Aged gem...

Beautifully landscaped golf course in the Ardennes, mainly in the forest with beautiful old trees and a great, difficult course design. Partly long par4s alternate in hilly terrain with accessible par5s. Great golf experience if it weren't for the slow and very poorly maintained greens that really devalue the game in this area. In addition, € 95 green fee for a completely closed 6th hole are unattended. Not to mention the very slow game that a marshall driving around does not (!) Influence. My high expectations were only partially fulfilled!

Much has not improved, but also the recent weather is due, because the age-old place is actually worth a visit. The front nine were actually in no good condition, tees bald, fairways partly scruffy, partly burned bad and the greens fast but hardly overgrown with grass - you puttet on the shady greens on flat rolled soil.. This improves significantly on the nicer back Nine, probably due to the fact that these are not so densely wooded. We have received 25% of the green fee on demand due to the condition.
Clubhouse is very nice, the restaurant ok (Tartar!), They speak only French.
Holes 1-9 currently only two stars, holes 10-18 for 4-5 stars.

For 85 € pp a place was offered in a very bad condition. Almost all haircuts were not recordable, because they had created new. The greens were drawn by so-called "dollar spots". I am reminded of other places that you are pointed to such conditions at the front desk. This does not seem to interest the "Royal Golf Club des Fagnes". My complaint after the round would be forwarded. The best was the gastronomy. On the terrace can linger and the food was a pleasure and made the impression a bit bearable. But a third time I will not play this place so fast again.

Dream Place

Very nice, interesting course. It is integrated in the beautiful wooded countryside and boasts mature trees. The fairways and greens are well-groomed. The corresponding chic restaurant and terrace round off the overall positive impression.
