Characteristics
As Southport's oldest club, established in 1885, Hesketh presents a distinguished chapter in British golf history. Situated at the northern end of the Merseyside sand dune system, the course offers a unique duality: one half meanders through towering dunes, while the other borders the Ribble Estuary's salt marshes. Designed by George Lowe and James Braid, the layout is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, renowned for its diverse birdlife. The course serves as a regular Open Championship Qualifying venue, testing players with stiff coastal breezes. A standout feature is the 16th hole, a par 3 described by Henry Cotton as the finest in Lancashire. The Edwardian clubhouse, perched atop a dune crest, offers commanding views of the finishing holes.
