Beautiful golf day

On August 10,2024, I visited the Hamburg Gut Waldhof Golf Club and was very satisfied. The facility is well maintained and beautifully situated, which made playing really enjoyable. The staff in the office were friendly and helpful, and the course offered very good fairways and greens.
After the round I was able to enjoy the good weather on the terrace. All in all it was a great day - I would love to come back.

Now the Waldhof is being expanded with an adventure golf facility. Nice for those who want to take advantage of this and certainly great family fun. Unfortunately, this affects the quality of the practice facility. In the future, pitching and chipping will take place on the left side of the driving range, in a significantly smaller area than before. Furthermore, this will only be possible with range balls, otherwise you run the risk of running into the landing zone of the range tees when you want to collect your balls again. Range balls for pitching and chipping make the cash register ring a little more and you can imagine how easy it will be to place a chip when a few people have already left dozens of balls here. We don't even want to talk about the noise pollution in the practice area when the adventure golf course is busy. In Prenden it is hardly possible to practice golf there in a concentrated manner, and it will be no different at Waldhof.
The actual golf course, which has certainly become more attractive with the new nine holes, has fortunately returned to an adequate level of maintenance in recent years. Tee boards were installed and some tees were straightened and some critical wet areas were drained. The fact that a new pond was created between the 7 and the 8 a few days ago is thanks to the amount of precipitation - there is little you can do about it, unfortunately at some point the ponds are full. Maybe you can make a virtue out of necessity and ensure that the two ponds are connected across track 7? That would give the hole a little kick and perhaps also increase the rating. Most players can hardly manage 7 with GiR anyway.
The new nine holes to the right of the driving range are very interesting and should not be considered easy just because they are short. Many of the greens are laid out diagonally and they are rock hard even when it rains, so you have to play steeply otherwise the ball will be over the top. A really good expansion for the short game. But beginners will also have a difficult time here.
The promised installation of toilets on the large course during the new construction of the 9-hole extension has not been fulfilled. Gut Waldhof is a club in the Hamburg area in an area with many places. It certainly doesn't have the exclusivity of a club like Gut Kaden. If you drive on the facility and go to tee 1 of the 19-hole course, you will notice that you share the area with a horse farm. Nonetheless, and to start with, the clubhouse is quite pleasant and the restaurant is good, with a solid menu and plenty to choose from. You can also sit on the terrace and look over the putting green.
The exercise facility deserves maybe 3 stars. There is plain terrain for short game practice, the said undemanding and shady putting green, and a solid driving range, albeit with weird balls that sound like rocks when you hit them. After a few incidents with broken wood, these should be replaced, but that had not happened yet.
The club has a brand new 9-hole course, a rather short pleasure with a mishmash of par 3 and short par 4 holes. These are very close together in the vicinity of the shoot and are still completely unplanted. Really brand new, but not a big hit. That's why you don't have to head for the club, rather something for beginners and to offer members an alternative when occupancy peaks.
But now to the most important thing, the 18-hole course. I don't find it bad at all. The first 9 holes are very varied and different. The challenge consists mainly of trees and forest, fairway curves and narrow corridors for the ideal line. Also, not all greens are visible when playing because they are elevated, making it difficult to classify when playing for the first time. The second 9 are a bit easier, flatter and I personally don't find holes 14 to 18 that exciting anymore. Par 73 with four par 5s and three par 3s. The course is not for big friends of the strategic iron game. Here players have an advantage who can hit a drive just 210 to 240 meters, then a green in regulation is actually always there, if you stay shorter, you don't make the curves (I wouldn't call it dog legs). I've always experienced the condition of the course as OK, fairways have dry spots from time to time, but it hasn't rained that much in the north for a few years. Greens good, directional stability and medium fast, bunker well maintained. Rough was mostly mowed down so that you could still get balls out.
Conclusion: you can head for this place with a clear conscience or play in a tournament, it's fun to play here. And in the clubhouse you can have something to eat and drink afterwards.
