Furness Golf Club Old Links

Central Drive, Walney Island, LA14 3LN Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, UK

Characteristics

Founded in 1872 on Walney Island, Furness Golf Club Old Links holds a prestigious place in history as England's third-oldest links course. Situated on the rugged Cumbrian coast, the layout offers a raw and authentic golfing experience defined by the Irish Sea. The course runs parallel to the coastline, providing players with spectacular panoramas of the Lakeland hills and the Isle of Man. Its character changes daily with the prevailing westerly winds, transforming the undulating fairways into a tactical challenge, particularly during the demanding stretch of 'shore holes'. After the round, the historic clubhouse—opened by Harry Vardon in 1916—offers a welcoming atmosphere to reflect on a classic British links encounter.

A real Links course

Traditionally very open links course direct to the sea so take the wind into account, but a real and magical experience. The way to the next T-box is not always clear, especially after hole 11. The flight in front of me took a short cut and I followed and suddenly landed on hole 17. A strokesaver is not available. Only online booking (£48). Staff is very helpful. The grounds are very English, no driving range, chipping area available, but bring your own balls. After a round of golf don’t miss a beer in the pub-style Clubhouse (with good size Snooker table).

Great Experience

Great, but a bit rough & rough. British applies's probably best!
