Enjoyable holiday golf course

The El Gouna golf course is in excellent condition and well worth a visit. It has wide fairways but is far from easy. At 6,269 metres (6,856 yards) from the white tees, it is a challenge for any golfer especially when the wind blows - as it did on each of the three days we played. The greens were quick and true and the fairways were well watered and in very good condition. The rough is not long but the ball sits down deeply enough to provide a real challenge. There are lots of water hazards from the surrounding lagoons.

We bought a 3 day package that was worthwhile. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The range using ‘floater’ balls was fun and the other practice facilities good.

Enjoyed it all in the February Egyptian sunshine.

Windy, warm, but still beautiful

The previous assessment, in my opinion, is far too critical and exaggerated.
The bunkers were tough, that's true. The buggies and trolleys were getting old, but that was about it.
The fairways were constantly watered, albeit with a hose! The greens were fast and good. The holes are varied and beautifully designed. With a headwind, they can sometimes be quite long. The driving range is great for warming up; of course, the balls are a bit lighter, so the distances are shorter than usual.
The terrace of the clubhouse was great, the service was friendly.

We knew we would be playing golf in the desert and enjoyed every day.

Dear Mr. Rolwy,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent golfing experience in El Gouna.

We truly appreciate your balanced and positive feedback. It is always rewarding for our team to hear that guests enjoyed the course layout, the fast greens, and the unique character of playing golf in a desert environment. As you mentioned, the combination of wind, course design, and firm playing surfaces can make each round both challenging and enjoyable.

We are also pleased to read that you appreciated the driving range for warming up, as well as the friendly service and the atmosphere on the clubhouse terrace. Our team works hard to create a welcoming and relaxed environment where golfers can enjoy their day both on and off the course.

Your understanding of the specific conditions required to maintain a golf course in a desert setting is especially appreciated. While we continuously work on upgrading equipment and facilities, it is wonderful to hear that the overall experience and the beauty of the course contributed to enjoyable rounds throughout your stay.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. We hope to welcome you back soon for many more memorable rounds in El Gouna.

Warm regards,
Golf Management Team

The green fee of €85 is absolutely not worth it!

To begin with, I spent 10 days at the Steigenberger El Gouna solely for golfing. The hotel and the courses in Egypt were recommended to me for winter training, so it was my first time there. Here's my objective review and what you get (or don't get) for €85 green fees – I'm simply comparing it to other countries or courses with similar green fees. I played El Gouna a total of six times.

Here are the negative points I noticed.

General information about the system/price:
Tee times must be booked well in advance, otherwise there is a risk of not getting a tee time. I booked 3 months in advance by email, and we encountered guests who had not booked anything in advance and were unable to play.
- Trolley for €9, the trolley was extremely old, partially broken and the handles have sharp edges.
- Cart for €30, no GPS, no water box, no towels, nothing; the vehicles are ancient, probably dating back to the site's founding, some are even rusty.
- Toilets and sanitary facilities are underground, sanitary facilities are on the grounds, especially poor for women, no soap, no paper, and no remedy even after numerous complaints.
- No water dispensers at the tees, so bring enough water with you.
- Driving range: you hit into the water with so-called floating balls; okay for warming up, but not for actual practice, as the distances are completely off.
- The ball machine is ancient; you have to force the chip in.
- The clubhouse was nothing special and partly dirty.

Comments on the golf course:
The place is in okay condition, but not perfect for the price and for the time of year (late February/early March).
- Irrigation is done manually during the day; the automatic system doesn't seem to be working. I didn't see it running at all during the day. Not even in the evenings or at night. I was staying directly opposite the tee box of the 17th, overlooking holes 15,16, and 17.
- Water hoses are partially lying on the fairway
- Many burn marks everywhere
- None of the bunkers are real bunkers; they're rock-hard and covered with sand and stones. Tip out and putt – anything else will just ruin your wedges.
- The greens are brutally fast, being rock-hard and unirrigated; balls don't stay put, high shots are almost impossible, and if they are, only with a lot of spin for the experienced player.
- The approach greens are extremely poorly mowed, Bermuda grass, extremely wavy and laid out like a net; putting is the trick here.
Tee times are every 10 minutes; checks are only made to ensure payment has been received, not when or how the tee shot is taken, thus ensuring an orderly game flow.
- Marshaller rarely drives around to keep the game running.
- Poorly organized mix of different handicap players, cart drivers and runners
- Many walkers and non-golfers cross the course; it's very annoying.

Conclusion: Is there anything positive?
Overall, it was a nice time, but absolutely not worth the money! For the same green fees, you can get much more in Turkey or Asia in general. Would I play there again? A definite NO!

Dear Mr. Gesaenger

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent visit to the golf facilities in El Gouna while staying at Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna. We always appreciate comments from golfers who travel internationally, and we value the opportunity to address some of the points you raised.

First, we are pleased that you chose to play the course six times during your stay. This in itself confirms that, despite some concerns, the course remained enjoyable enough for repeated rounds during your 10-day visit.

Regarding tee times, advance reservations during the winter season are strongly recommended as this is the peak golf period in El Gouna. Many guests travel specifically for winter golf training, and tee sheets can fill quickly. For this reason, we advise booking ahead, which you successfully did.

Concerning the practice facilities, the driving range uses floating balls due to the water-based range layout. This concept is common in several coastal and resort golf destinations and is primarily intended for warm-up rather than full distance calibration.

With regard to course conditions, maintaining a golf course in a desert climate is very different from courses in Europe, Turkey, or Asia. Irrigation, turf selection, and bunker composition must be adapted to the environment. While this may result in firmer playing conditions, many golfers actually appreciate the faster greens and firm surfaces as they create a more challenging and strategic style of play.

Your comments about carts, trolleys, and certain facilities have been noted. Equipment and infrastructure are continuously being upgraded as part of our long-term improvement plans, and guest feedback contributes to prioritizing these upgrades.

We would also like to clarify that the course is part of an open resort community in El Gouna, where pedestrian paths intersect certain areas of the landscape. While this is part of the destination’s design, safety and course etiquette are always monitored by our team.

Finally, comparisons with golf destinations such as Turkey or Asia are understandable; however, each destination offers a different style of golf experience. El Gouna is known for its unique desert-by-the-sea setting, technical course layout, and year-round playability, which many international golfers continue to appreciate.

We regret that certain elements did not fully meet your personal expectations, but we thank you for your feedback and for choosing to spend a significant part of your golf holiday with us.

Kind regards,
Golf Management team
