Characteristics
Set on a peninsula in Donegal Bay and susceptible to some quite ferocious ocean winds, this course is a mesmerizing test of links golf and arguably one of the finest links in Irish golf.
Described famously by an English golf journalist as 'hauntingly beautiful', it is everything you want it to be; tough, enjoyable, full of surprises and wonderfully inviting regardless of your skill level. There are great views of the Blue Stack Mountains and a wide variety of holes to enjoy during your round. Perhaps the finest of the lot is the short fifth, aptly called 'The Valley of Tears'.

A beautiful links course with hilly, undulating fairways and biting rough. You definitely don't want to lie off course; either the hard, dense rough will swallow you up, or you won't find your ball at all.
We played from the 4th easiest men's tee (green) and yet no player achieved their handicap!
The layout is appealing but not stunning; I particularly liked lanes 8 and 9!
Bunkers are good to play in, greens are true but not too fast.
The course is a good length, but at par 73!

Donegal is a good and varied place!
The first nine holes are the more beautiful ones and lead from holes 5 to 9 through the dunes.
The course is currently being redesigned by Pat Ruddy and Darren Clarke as they want to get back on par with Nairn&Portnoo!

We really liked the course layout, you don't feel cramped anywhere, all flights have enough space. Hole 5 is a challenging par 3, a pleasure for every ambitious golfer. In terms of landscape, the course is surrounded by water on three sides, which always guarantees beautiful views. Some tees are very nice on top of dunes. Great, fast greens that you should let the balls roll up on.
