Thought this was a great course, tricky in spots! Great welcome from all the staff …. Food was plentiful and great service with spectacular views of lough Ree.. couldn’t fault it. Will be back!

On the second stop of our Ireland golf tour, we were able to play the Athlone Golf Club course, founded in 1892, and we did not regret our choice for a second.
As it is one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland, the atmosphere on and around the course is different from that of golf courses operated by larger resorts. Here, it is mainly club members who play: young and old, so the course is always lively.
We always felt very welcome and were able to integrate well into the game.
We (as higher handicappers) found the course very varied and not easy, as hardly any fairway is straight or runs in a straight line. There are also plenty of ups and downs (not just on hole 13). In addition, the men's tee box adds a considerable amount of difficulty. That cost us quite a few balls.
The condition of the course was appropriate given the circumstances: the fairways had suffered from the hot, dry days in July. The greens were in good condition and of average speed.

The reception was very friendly. We played on August 11th, 2024 at 11am. The course was well attended. The course has an unusual course, the rest is pleasant but not difficult. The tee shots were OK at most, the greens were blunt and slow. Wide fairways made for stress-free play. The restaurant was full (Sunday). The service was OK, but the espresso was cold. The course runs over the small hill on the southwestern shore of Lough Ree. This always offers beautiful views of the various bays of the lake. The fairways are well maintained and beautifully landscaped. Hole 13 is particularly exciting! The reception was very attentive as guests, the clubhouse with its bar offered a nice conclusion to the Round.
