Wonderful Course — A Must Play
5.0 of 5 starsReviewed September 5, 2025
Brancaster as Royal West Norfolk GC is known is an extraordinary links course where wind and tides impact your play in unusual ways. High tides may force you to walk 20-30 minutes to reach the clubhouse / course. If the road is flooded then your round will become more challenging with a few holes becoming very narrow and greens surrounded with water. We played Brancaster at low tide and during a week when high tides were not flooding the road. We can’t wait to visit again and play it in very high tides. The design of the course is such that your risk appetite will be tested off the tee and in your approaches. The prevailing winds are opposites in colder and warmer months and the course will play very differently. The diversity of holes will keep you interested and focused. It also translates into a very thorough examination of your game. Brancaster is highly rated / ranked and considered among the very top courses in the British Isles in the “fun / putting a smile on your face” category. The welcome in the pro shop was second to none and the members we met very friendly. An extraordinary classic links in an beautiful spot played at a fast pace. Pure bliss!

Nice course, awful hospitality.

Having played the course a couple of times I took a visit on the weekend to see how badly the course had been affected by the tidal storm, to which it had been to some extent along with some structural damage to a building at the end of the clubhouse. I went in to ask for a scorecard for a friend and was told to 'sod off' along with an aggressive 'sorry, who the hell are you?' I guess if it had been Arnold Palmer passing he may have got a better response. Hopefully next time the storm hits it will sweep this man and his clubhouse out to sea...

5 stars for the tidal links!

In bright sunshine and low tide we played the best course in Norfolk.
What a location between high and low tide! The parking lot is not accessible at high tide and some holes are then flooded, so some greens are on wooden planks, which looks cool at low tide, becomes almost an island green at high tide...!
How far the guest can play is not clear to me (???).
The members can then only reach the site by foot via the rear beach :-)!
It all starts with the fact that after paying the fee, you pull your pull trolley over the dune sand path to the sea, across to tee 1, between the beach goers through deep sand! And then?
A double fairway of 1 and 18 on a narrow headland! Actually, the whole 18 holes continued so spectacularly!
The layout and design, a creative and visual masterpiece! The best designers and golfers of their time built this links course, which for me ranks too far down in the English golf course rankings! Royal West Norfolk is one of the top ten golf courses in England! The boats lie out on the flat bay seabed at low tide.
The greens, the fairways and the pot bunkers were at 1A level despite the extreme dryness.
The course is pure golfing pleasure and also nice to score for players with a good length!
Royal West Norfolk is Norfolk's #1!
Hunstanton, Theteford, Klngs Lynn, Sheringham & Royal Cromer also all get the full 5 points!!! Norfolk is an insider tip but a top golf travel destination!
