Characteristics
Situated in the Scottish Highlands just north of Inverness, Muir of Ord Golf Club offers a delightful test of golf steeped in history. Originally founded in 1875, the course was masterfully expanded to 18 holes by James Braid in the 1920s. A unique feature of the layout is the Inverness-to-Wick railway line, which dissects the course, separating the opening and closing holes from the challenging middle section. The terrain is a scenic mix of heathland and moorland, offering views of Ben Wyvis and the Beauly Firth. The signature 12th hole is widely regarded as one of the toughest par-3s in the region. Voted Scottish Golf Club of the Year in 2016, the club is known for its warm hospitality and excellent visitor facilities.

Our second course in Scotland was this 18-hole course north of Loch Ness, not far from Inverness. We received a very friendly welcome in the pro shop. Trolleys were available for 5 pounds, which we took advantage of.
The course presents a mixed bag. At first, it looked very rough, more like a links course. The fairways are short and narrow, with low heather as rough, which at least doesn't swallow balls. Beyond the railway line, the course becomes more difficult, becoming hilly and, as a newcomer, difficult to see exactly where you're going or where the problems lie. Starting on the back 9, there were suddenly wide, lush green fairways, and it felt like a parkland course. Then, in two par 3s, it goes wildly down and up again before returning to the initial pattern. For some, it's varied; for others, it seems half-baked. But you can still have fun, and we even got a decent dinner in the clubhouse.
