Macroom Golf Club is a magnificent parkland course situated within the castle grounds on the winding banks of the Sullane River. With the Kerry mountains creating the backdrop to the west, and the great old trees proudly standing erect, the golfers cannot but be impressed by the peaceful beauty that surrounds them. The 18-hole par 72 course, with a standard scratch of 70 off the back tees, has many interesting and historical features. The 2nd hole, a 115 m par-3 is cut out from the side of the hill. While it is a short hole the entrance to the green is well guarded by an oak tree and the grassy bunker (known locally as "The Banana") on the left of the green stops many a ball from rolling on to the putting surface. The 3rd,tee is overshadowed by, The Double Rank one of the remaining original Falconry’s in these Islands.
Many a good score has been drowned in the River Sullane, which comes into play from the 10th to the 14th holes. A, well placed drive in these holes is essential particularly at the 12th where the second shot over the river is vital. The "Bathing House", where, in bygone days, the ladies of the town changed to go swimming, could tell many a good story of wagers won and lost as it looks across the Sullane at the 12th green which is positioned right on the bank of the river. The 18th hole, with "out-of-bounds" on either side is a testing finish, but a good drive can set one up with a good birdie chance.The visitor is assured of a warm west Cork welcome in the fine clubhouse.

Much Golf for little money

Very friendly welcome – at the beginning we were even given a personal tour of the facility by the club manager.
The front nine and back nine differ significantly in layout. The front nine are very hilly; an electric trolley is therefore recommended and can be rented for €10. Water comes into play much more frequently on the back nine. Holes 12 and 14, in particular, require good course management and strategic play.
The course was in excellent condition overall. The greens were sufficiently fast and true. Approach shots often demanded a high degree of precision. The par 3 on the 2nd hole was particularly memorable.
Overall, the Macroom Golf Club is a varied and excellently maintained golf course that demands precision and strategy, but always remains fair to play.
I very rarely award five stars, and the Macroom Golf Club does have a few minor flaws. The clubhouse isn't particularly inviting, and the showers could be in better condition. However, for the quality of play offered here for €40, five stars are absolutely deserved.
