Humewood Golf Club is one of the cradles of golf in South Africa. This links course, modelled on Scottish designs, opened as early as 1931 in what was then Port Elizabeth. The result is a harmonious blend of dune landscape and seagrass boundaries, situated right by the sea with wide, undulating fairways and, in some cases, large greens. According to golfing legend Gary Player, the 13th hole on the course is the most difficult par 4 he has ever played. This 402-metre-long, uphill ‘monster’ demands absolute precision. The shot is played across a narrow, undulating fairway towards a tiny, elevated green situated on a plateau

Worth a go

Beginning with the friendly and relaxing staff. A Links course, sand, rough, eating golf balls.
We haven't booked ahead, just called reception – no problem.
The prices are average. Well maintained, the wind a real challange. We have felt beeing alone, a very relaxing play.
Looking forward playing another round here.

True Left Course
3.0 of 5 starsReviewed March 2, 2025
Course played on February 28,2025 Original from the organizer: the only true links course in Africa.
Not too much promised in any respect: lots of wind, hit the ball and pray, it will come to rest somewhere - not my favorite. Greens slow and bumpy, bunkers very deep and with lots of sand.
Clubhouse a bit dated, pro shop very limited.
On the first floor there is a highly recommended restaurant, with all Hole in One players immortalized on the wall; a real eye-catcher

Great, real links course with deductions in the B grade
4.0 of 5 starsReviewed January 27, 2023
If I had been dropped off in the middle of the square and had to guess where in the world I was I would have said Ireland… Scotland?
This is a "real" links course straight out of a picture book. Not a £280 styled course but a £30 public course somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
That's how links work. Hard, wavy fairways... few pot bunkers... large, slightly wavy greens... to the right and left of the fairway wide meadows or scrubby bushes... you can often see the sea behind the dunes. Everything a bit rough and casual. We only had a light wind, which didn't affect our game. Anyone who experiences the usual strong PE wind here is sure to have a real challenge.
The clubhouse is great! Not because it's fancy, quite the opposite. Here 100 years old morbid charm can be experienced.
South Africans are warm, friendly and communicative. But also sometimes funny and loud on the pitch. We had a super nice group of men in front of us, who had enough beer with them with a large cool bag and loudly commented on every shot. The longer they played, the more often they searched in the bushes...
Unusual for us but very likeable.
Now the deductions in the B grade:
We rented clubs: never experienced such bad rental clubs! And my wife had to play with men's racquets. The trolleys almost fell apart.
Conclusion: space is definitely worth it, but don't expect high expectations of the rest!
It's not like St Francis Links.
