Professional facility with a stunning view

Played No. 2 on July 6,2026, and No. 3 on July 7,2026. Gullane Golf Club, with its three 18-hole courses (No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3), is located approximately 20 miles east of Edinburgh's city center, at the entrance to the coastal town of Gullane. At the other end of the town are the renowned Muirfield Golf Club and the Reignsance Golf Club, which hosts the Scottish Open on the DP World Tour. There are several other golf courses in the surrounding area. This is truly a golf destination. All three courses at Gullane GC are genuine links courses. There is a pro shop (Visitor Clubhouse) with an attached restaurant and a starter for courses 2 and 3. Course 1 has its own pro shop, a golf museum, and the Members' Clubhouse, as well as its own starter, located across the road. There is also an "Old Clubhouse," which now houses a restaurant. In front of the entrance is a 6-hole short course for children up to 12 years old. The driving range is located behind the starter's house for courses 2 and 3; balls are provided free of charge. I'll describe courses 2 and 3 here, as these are the only ones we played. The staff in the pro shop were friendly but seemed a little stressed. Quite the opposite was true of Simon, the starter. He was fantastic, greeted us warmly, and explained everything. You can tell he's experienced and enjoys what he does—a real character. Course 2 is a par 71 for men with only 3 par 3s and 2 par 5s, and a par 73 for women with 4 par 5s. The start of the first two holes, where you cross the main road after the first, is still easy. The third hole climbs steeply up to the high cliffs. Once you reach the top and catch your breath, you'll have a sea view from the 3rd green onwards, all the way to the 16th, but from this point on, you'll be exposed to the wind. The dominant element is the wind, along with numerous well-placed pot bunkers protecting the greens. Most of the fairways and greens are undulating. The holes are predominantly quite straight. Water hazards, as are common on links courses, are absent, but there's plenty of rough, sometimes thick, sometimes thin. If you don't pull your ball too far, or let the wind carry it away, you'll find it again fairly easily. Higher handicappers should choose the forward tees of the three available options. There are no tee markers, but there are tee posts indicating the distances. The signal holes are the 11th (par 3) and 17th (par 4), both of which slope steeply downhill. Don't forget your camera. Even amateurs can drive the 17th with a tailwind. The views of the Firth of Forth, the sea, and the dunes are unique; you should enjoy them, even if your game isn't going so well. During our round, we even encountered a friendly deer. The only loud thing here is the constant wind. The course was in immaculate condition. I haven't seen such well-maintained tee boxes in a long time. And the greens were top-notch, without a single flaw. No. 3 is the little sister of No. 2, only slightly shorter at par 67 for men and par 68 for women. There are only two tee box options, but several tee boxes, which explains the excellent condition. Essentially, the layout is the same. Here too, the course climbs after two holes and descends again on the 15th (par 3). Green fees for the three courses range from £55 (No. 3) to £285 (No. 1), depending on the course, day of the week, and time of day. Why No. I don't understand why No. 1 is so expensive, and although I didn't play it, I think it's too pricey. It seems the members are given priority to play in peace. You can also buy combination green fees for several courses or longer periods. We paid a reasonable 100 GBP for a round on No. 2 on a Monday morning and 55 GBP for No. 3 on a Tuesday afternoon. Tee times can be booked online via the website, but you have to pay immediately. Tee times on Nos. 2 and 3 are available at short notice, but you should book No. 1 in advance. Manual push trolleys cost a hefty 9 GBP, but they are the best, most modern, and newest models compared to other courses. If you love true links golf and don't mind a climb or two, Gullane Golf is the place for you.

We played Gullane 2 in September 2023. The price on weekdays is very reasonable at 75 pounds. Very friendly, relaxed reception even though there was a lot of activity on all 3 courses.
The chic, relatively new clubhouse invites you to linger.
An extremely funny starter who conveyed his information about the course with high entertainment value was a particular highlight.
After playing the 3rd hole uphill, you always have a magnificent view over the Fife up to the 17th hole. Due to the very dry summer of 23, the fairways were of course particularly hard. If you keep the tee shots and fairway shots flat, the balls run like rabbits, the wind is easy to calculate and the greens can be reached in regulation. However, you have to plan in advance where the balls will go because the bunkers, on the always slightly sloping fairways, magically attract these balls. The greens were very well maintained and lightning fast.
This is challenging but fair links golf.
Overall, a visit to Gullane is highly recommended.

Zero stars for the club management: The club management did not offer us a refund for two tee times booked and paid for in 2020 (!), which had to be canceled twice due to Corona (travel conditions), but only a voucher for the following year. All other booked clubs and hotels refunded all advance payments without hesitation in the difficult situation at the time. Little understanding from us because this is not a poor club that needs every green fee to survive. Too bad.
So now we're enjoying it. Also because of the British Open there were a lot of Americans there. All trolleys and carts taken :-). I played the course twice a few years ago and have never seen so many guests jostling for the few spots on the driving range and clubhouse.
I find Gullane 1 and 2 varied and exciting. Great location if you've played up the hill and nice lanes towards the sea with great views of the bay. Still not a highlight in East Lothian for my taste. Also, Gullane 1 in particular, way overpriced compared to the alternatives very close by (Glen, Craigielaw etc).

No.1 is a sporty toughe challenge even in the sun and weak wind, No.2 is slightly shorter and "easier". Service from the booking to the Proshop very good. Tip for a good lunch after or before the round: The Old Clubhouse pub in the village!
