Golf with tradition on Sylt

Played on September 11,2023. The flat 18-hole golf course with tradition is located in absolute peace and nature, practically directly at the entrance from Hindenburgdamm in the east of the island of Sylt. Every now and then you can hear the quiet trains passing by on the back nine. The signage to the golf club is fairly straightforward and a navigation system is helpful. The course is probably the oldest on the island and one of the founding fathers is none other than Axel Springer. The small, cute clubhouse is thatched but modernized and also offers a small restaurant (with a limited menu on Mondays). The club is certainly more member-oriented, but guests are certainly welcome and are greeted warmly by the employee at the counter. However, it can be assumed that due to the green fee prices between 60 € and 135 € (whether on weekdays or weekends), depending on the time of year, you want to select your guests. There are no special rates such as Sundowner or Early Bird and participation in the Sylt Golf Hopping Card. As far as we know, if someone from the other players didn't say hello, it was more likely that they were guests. The game operation on a Monday morning was manageable. There are no official start times. However, for guests. You can't book it online. A corresponding request via email a few weeks before our trip to Sylt was answered immediately and the desired start time was confirmed. The course is anything but boring, even if the big highlights are missing. The tracks definitely have their charm, especially because of some water obstacles, often in the drive landing zones. When it's windy you should definitely play strategically, because then the mostly open fairways quickly become narrow. A few slight doglegs and one or two bunkers also come into play. On lane 3 you have to play over a dike. The second blow, when you lie in front of the dike, is blind. On some tracks the balls do bounce when they hit a dry, rather hard spot. The course isn't short either and on one or two men's tees (yellow/blue) you have to stretch to reach the fairway, especially in headwinds. Unfortunately, there are no visual images of the courses on the tee boards. The signage of the train sequence is good. The condition was also good, the tees and especially the greens were very good. There were some brown patches on the fairways, but overall it was fine. You can see the sea a few times, especially on the front nine and on the 17th. I can recommend a round on the GC Morsum course without hesitation and if you don't play in high season, it's not that expensive either.

A relatively open place in the heather landscape style with some links elements - for such a flat landscape many tracks are quite wavy. At the very beginning two to three holes with a beautiful view of the sea, otherwise rather sparse.
Unfortunately, most of the railways are not particularly original - many are very similar and quickly forgotten. Only a few lanes with water hazards are tactically interesting - otherwise it is important to shoot the ball as far forward as possible, the fairways are wide enough. However, the "shooting forward" is sometimes not that easy. The place is not really short (6,009m from the regular yellow men's tees) and especially with a headwind (it blew STRONG - the seagulls went on foot, probably because it was faster than flying against the wind) are the greens (moderately undulating and very slowly) for us normal golfers hardly reachable “in regulation” - “Bogey” already feels like “Par”!
Even the Par3s are partly “crisp” (180m) and the paths between the lanes are partly a bit longer and not always easy to find - therefore (and as protection against wind and weather) a cart is recommended to everyone who uses one here may (only with a certificate or from 70 years).
Overall, the condition is very good. The only drawback is the mowing residue that has partly remained in the rough, which makes it unnecessarily difficult to find the balls.
We cannot at all confirm that people here in the club tend to be hostile or even snooty towards guests - on the contrary! Everyone, because we met - professionals, gastronomy, members - were really very nice and booking the tee time by phone was completely unproblematic. A relaxed halfway break in a beach chair with cake, cocoa and rum was easily possible and the restaurateur even postponed her evening a little because of us, in order to serve us very tasty crab bread and spaghetti with fresh chanterelles!
Unfortunately, as with so many things on Sylt, the following applies: Simply too expensive! Even the GF of EUR 70, - reduced in the off-season, is clearly too much for this average space, as is the 45, - for the cart. The greens were unfortunately also quite freshly aerated and correspondingly bumpy - this was not pointed out when booking the start time or when checking in - there was also no green fee reduction (as is usual elsewhere).
Conclusion: well-maintained, but overpriced average place - 3 stars. (In the "Golf Bear Ranking": 5 out of 10 points.)
NB - My personal ranking of the four Sylt places:
Clear leadership for “Budersand” - the other three places are very close together in the evaluation. "GC Sylt" in 2nd place, due to the slightly more pleasant landscape just before the "Marine" course - slightly behind due to the less varied "Morsum" courses).
Recommendation: If you are ever on the island - "take" all four seats. If you happen to be not there - go there because of “Budersand”!
