Start of a great sport for me

I started playing at Catterick as a junior officer in 1954. In those days sheep used to keep the grass down and messed up the greens, despite them being roped off. I returned to Catterick in all 8 times and can remember my wife joining when we paid £6 for family membership. I was lucky in that I always seemed to find good players to help me and I remember getting really frustrated when I left to go to Singapore with a handicap of 16 and came back two years later still off 16! Then the course had improved and by some magic I got my handicap down to 6 in nine weeks which enabled me to hit the dizzy heights of the Corps team and playing at all the really fantastic courses mainly around Surrey. But, I never forgot the pleasure the Catterick course gave me and having reached the age of 86 think my chances of getting back to play there are very slim.
