Still the best in Portugal

Played again in Nov 2023 and the course and design us still the best in Portugal.
The club had a few weeks ago a big fire, which burnt the waist land around the fairways but did not impacted the fairways or greens.
The club house is now looking a bit tired and they should do some improvements.
Very friendly staff.

Played as a single handicaper end Feb 2020 a few times this georgeous course.
Its a dream! Every hole just an experience.
Fairways and greens in superb quality and very frienfly staff.
One of the best of the over 200 courses I have played, may be even the very best.
Greenfees are high but friving range balls and Electro Car are included.
So if you take these costs out, then the course is cheaper then a few others around Faro.
Everybody should have played this course once...

Unbelievable beautiful course, extremly well maintained, fast and difgicuilt greens, monster bunker, some of them 3 meters deep, tough bermuda fluff grass arounf the greens, lot of water, superb driving range.

We 2 girls with grey hair played from silver tee - our best golf at the Algarve coast - and we will be back next year!

Let's start with the most important: MR is a great golf course! Challenging, hilly, varied, mint condition! Then in addition, outstanding practice facilities (come early so that you can use them!), club house, shop & facilities in the same league, and then a fantastic restaurant!
What then makes Monte Rei one of the best in Europe is that you feel very welcomed as a guest, and even as a mid-handicaper. The course, the practice facilities and the service is all there for you. It's not an exclusive club where you feel you are intruding, or isn't really welcome. MR is world class!

I played the course twice with my wife in June 2023. Despite the heat and drought, the place was an experience and in good condition. Every hole is spectacular and fun to play. The timing of the tee times guarantees that there is no waiting or pushing. The staff were incredibly warm and nice. The driving range has style and fits beautifully into the ambience. Drinks and ice cubes were included in the buggy. There was also the opportunity to purchase additional drinks during the round. Here, too, the responsible employee was simply incredibly nice. Only the pro shop could be better equipped, but that doesn't detract from the overall impression.
Overall one of the best places we have played so far. We'd love to come back.

I played a round today. Unfortunately, the fairways have not received water for a long time. They are yellow and feel like sand. Played on 09/06/2022. The classy 18-hole course, which describes itself as the number 1 golf course in Portugal, is located near the Spanish border above the 22 motorway in the Algarve hinterland. The homepage promises a unique service for us golfers and when you enter the clubhouse, you can also feel a touch of luxury. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus, which you can clearly see in the many and sometimes very large bunkers with high edges. The course was perfectly integrated into the landscape. The views of the course of the fairways from the respective mostly elevated tees are always fascinating (don't forget your camera). In addition to the bright white bunkers, there are some water hazards and easy doglegs. You should play more strategically here, even if many tees are open. One or the other route to the fairway or the PAR 3 to the green has to be overcome over water or rough. There are 4 tees and for the gentlemen, higher HC is a good idea to play from silver instead of gold. You play in absolute peace and nature. And yes, the nature around the golf course is clearly marked by the major fire in spring 2022, but the golf course can't do anything about that and it doesn't detract from the design either. Since we played this course a few years ago and awarded 5 stars +, we had to go back to Monte Rei.
Nothing has changed in the unique layout, you only see the current hole and usually no other players. 18 valleys, 18 holes.
The staff is still very friendly, but the outstanding service of the past is gone.
The condition is mediocre at best and what really annoyed me are the very different fast greens. From lightning fast to excruciatingly slow, there was obviously a fungal infestation here some time ago.
The course is pretty easy to play (if you don't take champions yellow). Since a buggy is included, the power should be enough to play his handicap.
The views over the interesting courses are still nice, but a big fire last year spoiled the area badly. A ball washer can be found at most every 4 holes and towels certainly not.
Now I hear: but Corona and fire you can't do anything... Ok, but a normal green fee of €220 is a joke and even for the twilight green fee of €170 I expect a lot more from a course.

The course has many bunkers and water hazards on 11 lanes, which are best left out of play. Great layout and some tracks are uniquely created (especially 13 + 14) friendliness and courtesy was absolutely there, but I expect a 5 star system, although nothing to the contrary has ever happened to me in Portugal.
We had 2 rounds as part of a Stay&Play package.
The place consisted only of fairway, everything mowed short, I didn't think it was world class.
On our 2nd round, the greens had been aerated without warning, and when asked about it in the clubhouse, they ticked it off as "bad luck".
How the place comes about on its high slope is a mystery to me, because difficult looks different.
On the round: Apparently the members use the long distances between the tee times to look for and fish for balls and are not interested in the following flight.
Because you don't meet on the opposite lane, you can't tell the front flight that you're standing and waiting...
So much for the great layout - each lane for itself.
Marshall hasn't been seen since tea 1 either.
Unfortunately, a lot of things burned down all around, so that you can only guess how great it used to be.
About the accommodation: 5 stars are attached to the outside - but are not included!

You can't expect more from a golf course. This facility is worth every penny. We played in the times of the Covid 19 pandemic (August 2020), so the usual services were missing a bit, but the place was in top condition. We played Monte Rey on 09/15/2020.100 KM journey from Portimao accepted, place is "in the middle of nowhere", reception, caddy master very friendly, cart and range balls included, nevertheless, 440 € for 2 people is already an announcement.

As part of our stay at the nearby Robinson Club Quinta da Ria, we played the course in the spring of 2016-2017 and 2018 - and each time we were again very pleased with space and organization. This is simply highly professional - from check-in to e-carts, marshall, starter, driving range, etc.
The course itself is crisp, not easy to play, and unfortunately not playable without e-cart. But still a pleasure - the different lanes really make their mark, every lane is completely different, most of the time you feel like you are traveling alone. The paths between the tracks is long (therefore e-cart duty), but are rarely seen other golfers.
The price is of course high, but if you know that they are not really dependent on green fee players, you understand that.
In the clubhouse one expects a name plaque after the first two rounds - but from the third on there is no more.
All in all a fantastic place, the green, the white bunkers, the blue water and the wonderful sky - a madness.
