Characteristics

This golf course, which is open since 1993, is situated within easy reach from the Bremen motorway junction. The landscape is characteristic for a location at the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. A visit of the city of Verden, which is known for its cathedral and its horse riders, is worthwhile even for someone who doesn't play golf. Many of the 18 holes are slightly undulating and lined with woodlands, others feature skillfully-arranged water hazards. A 6-hole course will extend the club's offer.

Ups and downs

Played A and B. A was the nicer version. However, after the glowing reviews, we were a bit disappointed. So the A loop only developed from the 4th hole. The B loop is very open and is almost reminiscent of a shooting field. The condition of the fairways was rather borderline. Better laying was needed here. The green speed was standard, although B had the more challenging greens. We found the green fee to be reasonable. Unfortunately there were no towels.

B course left style

A note on the October review:

The B course links style has wavy and undulating greens.
The greens on the A and C course are all very flat.

You just have to make compromises if there is no more space available.

Pathetic links and beautiful forest

Played end of August 2022, HCP 14

We played the course combination B/C:
Course "B" is another course advertised as a "Links" course. Unfortunately, it's actually just a rather pathetic "left" attempt - it's just not enough to simply drill holes in a bare landscape with a little tall "fese-grass" and no trees worth mentioning. This results in a bare landscape with holes and a little high "fescue" without any trees worth mentioning, but still no "links" course! Plus POND (but no seashore)! The bunkers are also old-fashioned "normal" field, forest and meadow sand pits and have nothing in common with the "nasty" British pot bunkers.

This makes the course quite easy to play - the rough is quite thin, the balls are easy to find and generally playable without any problems.

Course "C", on the other hand, is a pretty nice parkland/forest course, so it's correspondingly narrow and quite difficult for anyone who can't play very consistently and precisely in a straight line (that's probably for most of us *sigh*).

Unfortunately, the greens play quite differently on the two 9-hole loops. On "B" they are still moderately fast and fairly level, on "C" they are very slow, but slightly undulating. The grass was way too high there, perhaps because these putt areas were recently freshly slit.

The relative tranquility of the entire area is nice - only rarely can you hear the train passing by in the distance or a small plane circling high above.

Less beautiful, however, the condition. The fact that the fairways were completely burnt due to the weather (there had been unusually high temperatures of over 30° Celsius for weeks beforehand) is not the fault of greenkeeping (this could certainly only be improved with unreasonably high effort and environmentally harmful measures) and hardly impedes the playability of the balls - it just doesn't look that nice. The balls roll "without end" - you can achieve fantastic distances - but sometimes the long journey ends in a bunker that "actually" seemed out of reach.
Unfortunately, however, the condition of these bunkers was pretty bad - like concrete with a wafer-thin layer of powdered sugar sand.
The condition of the haircuts was OK.

Speaking of "far" - a cart is recommended for everyone who doesn't like walking - the distances between the lanes are sometimes quite long.

Conclusion: Play when you're there anyway - you don't have to go there. Barely 3 stars, also because of the friendliness in the secretariat and because of the beautiful forest on course "C". (In the "Golf Bear Ranking": 5 out of 10 points.)
