Avalon Field Club at New Castle

Played this course yesterday on a golf trip with friends whom I’ve been doing this since 1992. We’ve played in Cambridge Springs, Pa, Warren Pa, Hubbard Ohio on the Penn Ohio golf trail. Well when I saw the lineup for this year our least day took us to New Castle Pa, for a round at Avalon Field Club the former New Castle CC, this is a Tillinghast gem. It is so classic and I felt privileged to be playing, Greens are very very slopey especially #11. The ball on my chip rolled and rolled. From a shot near the hole to thirty feet away, some thought this gimmicky but to me a real challenge. When I play a golf hole and turn the corner to see a new hole and am aghast wow. Since I didn’t score so well I was still very happy to have played this layout. Fairway tee shots were generous. A few forced Carries made a few holes difficult but very challenging. If you are driving route 79 north of Pittsburgh. Jump off at New Castle to experience a great AW Tillinghsdt course
