From California to Narvik . . .

It took me a long time to get the 7500 miles from my home outside of San Francisco to one of the most northerly towns in the world, Narvik, Norway. But the isolated 18-hole Narvik golf course was worth every hour of that long flight. Even the spartan accomdations at the forested club house were an added plus to the golf adventure. Located at the farthest end of the beautiful Skjomen Fjord and surrounded by Pine trees and granite faced cliffs, it reminded me a lot of our own Lake Tahoe area in the Sierra Mountains. This is a magnificent golf course that also serves as a walking area in a park like setting along the Skjoma River that's famous for its trophy sized Salmon. My favorite hole was the tenth with its island green. Just about everyone in Norway speaks some English, try to team up with a club member when you book a round at this amazing golf course.

Nestled in a dreamlike landscape

We really wanted to play this golf course on our vacation because the photos were so beautiful and there were supposed to be rental clubs. The photos didn't lie, the course is really beautifully situated, in a valley between steep mountains with a very beautiful pine forest. The layout is unusual in that almost all of the holes except the par 3 are doglegs. The friendly reception had already pointed out that it would be difficult to play a good score if the tees were too short. They were and the score accordingly. But that doesn't matter, the weather was nice and it was a lot of fun that precise play was required. The only thing that dampened our joy was that the rental clubs were the worst we received on our northern tour.
