Overpriced average course

Played here last week, paid £115 which included 18 holes, range balls, golf club hire and buggy.
The course itself is well kept, very challenging due to the amount of bunkers and wind.
The one major downside is the golf clubs as they are very old and below par, the grips might as well not be on due to the very poor quality. I asked for a better set but was advised these are the only ones they give for hire and as it’s holiday golf it’s the best they can do. My issue here is that if one is paying £115 for a round the least you can expect is a decent set of clubs.
The poor quality of the clubs spoilt the round.

Worth a trip

On our way from Soma Bay to El Gouna, we stayed overnight at the Steigenberger Madinat Makadi (adults only) to try out the 18-hole golf course right on its doorstep. Both the hotel and the golf course were a very pleasant surprise.
The course layout is varied due to occasional water hazards and the very hilly topography. Those who are not very mobile are better off using a golf cart.
The back nine in particular are surprising, offering a very pristine, typical landscape in a quiet, desert-like environment.
The fairways are lush and green, and the greens are true but not too fast. With its attractive scenery and tranquil atmosphere, the course offers a real alternative to the now overly hectic and built-up Soma Bay. We'll definitely be back!

Alternative to the courses in Soma Bay: Soma Bay Golf

We played the course three times in mid-January 2026 as an alternative to Soma Bay.

Since we were staying in Soma Bay, we used the shuttle service organized by the hotel or the pro shop at Makadi Golf. The cost was €40 each way.

For more information on other courses, see Soma Bay Golf.
Unlike Soma Bay, there's no construction around the Madinat Makadi Golf Resort. All you hear is the wind. We were able to play all three rounds quickly. There were no bottlenecks or long waits, no golf schools with overwhelmed students. It's a good thing that golf pros seem to avoid this course. Ultimately, this course is more challenging than Soma Bay. The terrain is also more difficult, with frequent ups and downs. Yes, we live in Austria, and yes, this course is definitely not flat. Nevertheless, we always walked with a trolley. No problem for us. But a certain level of physical fitness is definitely required.

Layout – no trees, shade, or bushes whatsoever. If you miss the fairway, which wasn't always easy given the often strong crosswinds, you end up in waste areas. There you'll find hard ground, hardly any sand, and usually small stones. But they're still playable. On the plus side, you don't lose any balls here, only your score.
The golf courses are always beautiful, but almost always dotted with waste areas or bunkers in the target zone. The greens are also frequently well-defended by bunkers.
Playing from the yellow tees, it is also generally necessary to carry more than 150 meters to overcome the waste areas that are often located in front of the fairways.
When playing with the driver or long irons, you should (must) master playing with crosswinds. Against a headwind, even a 150-meter carry can feel like a long way.

Condition.
Six tea boxes in size and always very well maintained.
Bunkers: mostly placed correctly on the fairway, but sometimes they shouldn't really be called bunkers. In three rounds played, some were rock hard. On the plus side, bunker calculations were then unnecessary. It was also observed that (even good players) preferred to use their putter for the bunkers positioned in front of the green. Sometimes it was impossible to penetrate the sand crust with sand wedges.
The greens are always very hard and fast. Many are situated on a plateau and are truly undulating. A real treat for golfers. No dry patches and, due to their hardness, no pitch marks.
Other > Signage and paths are sufficient.
Toilets are scarce. But always clean.
Huts, shade providers, etc., only two per 18 holes.
Practice area/Driving range:
We didn't use it, as it's not located near the course. However, there is a shuttle cart from the pro shop to the driving range. There are also three or four practice holes there.
A clubhouse/restaurant is available. It is affiliated with the Steigenberger Hotel. However, green fee guests are very welcome.
Proshop/Secretariat > Staff super friendly and extremely helpful. However, the shop's selection is reduced to an absolute minimum.
Overall conclusion:
We would gladly come back, as we have always enjoyed very relaxed staff and rounds of golf.
Since we also bought a green fee package for the three rounds here, the cost was reduced to €85. For such a great course, that's a perfectly acceptable price. Unfortunately, these days you have to pay considerably more for significantly less elsewhere.
For more information about the hotel, see Kempinski Soma Bay.
