Saxony and Saxony Anhalt
Art-culture-golf – that is Dresden
Like Berlin, Dresden in the German state of Saxony is always worth a visit. The capital city of the free state and its surroundings offer not only culture, the fruits of a rich history, artistic treasures from a great past and art enjoyment which compares favourably with any in Europe. The Dresden Elbe Valley has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Dresden, with the golf courses Ullersdorf and Dresden-Elbflorenz in Possendorf (both 18-hole championship courses), the Leipzig-Seehausen Golf Park also fulfil all requirements for beautiful and exciting golf.
In accordance with its centuries-long tradition as a city of the arts, visitors to Dresden can expect a wide spectrum of cultural offerings. There are well-known ensembles – the Saxon State Chapel, the Philharmonic – as well as the Semper Opera, Frauenkirche [Women’s Church], Zwinger or well-known collections of paintings, porcelain and precious items as well as the oldest art institute in Germany.
In order to still remain on the German Promenade Road and to play golf a little farther south, one should also visit the golf club in Chemnitz because they not only are prominent owing to their natural beauty, but also to their special hospitality.
Leipzig and Lützen
A good piece south of Dresden – but which can be reached quickly either upon the German Promenade Road or the Autobahn – we come across Leipzig, the great industrial city, the surroundings of which were again and again the site of great battles in the past. Here, near Jena and Auerstädt, Napoleon began to push farther eastward at the beginning of the 19th Century and here, where he also met his end a few years later at the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.
At the golf courses around Leipzig, however, it isn’t just about military reminiscences. Nonetheless, they can be combined well with a visit to the historical sites. There are, above all, the Leipzig Machern Castle Park Golf Club and the 1st Golf Club of Leipzig, both courses which are still new, but nevertheless are already of good quality – in the shadows of the Battle of the Nations and Gustav Adolphus’ monument, there are genuinely historical golf courses where earlier there are been no golf offerings in this region.
Saxony-Anhalt: Also worth a golf trip!
In the northwest, Saxony-Anhalt connects directly to the state of Saxony. The state, with the capital city of Magdeburg, extends from the Old Mark (also called the “Cradle of Prussia”), across the Magdeburg Börde and the Harz Mountains, the industrial area around Halle and Bitterfeld to the wine slopes along the Saale and Unstrut, the northernmost wine-growing region in Germany. As the epicentre of German history, this land is an ideal travel destination for cultural and city tourists, but is also worthwhile for nature enthusiasts and active vacationers such as for golf tourists – in the Meisdorf Castle Golf Club.
In the Old Mark, there are Salzwedel, Stendal and Havelberg – traditional little cities in an impressive, but above all pristine landscape: Elbe meadows, the Havel Marsh, the Drömling Nature Park, the Old Mark Wische, the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heath or Kalbesche Werder invite one to hike upon more than more than 80 kilometres on 18 nature trails.
Saale and Unstrut, the rivers which flow like lifelines through the southern part of Saxony-Anhalt give this region its name. The wonderful landscape conceals unique archaeological treasures. Saale-Unstrut – where Mephisto once caroused with Faust – represents relaxation, pleasure, high-quality cultural monuments and exciting experiences. Orchid-covered slopes, steep limestone cliffs, gentle meadows, fruit groves and verdant wine terraces with small picturesque vineyard cottages are characteristic for this region. A traditional wine land – where 1500 hours of sun warm the grapes during a year, gives it all a Tuscan flair.
