Portuguese Links golf at its best

This course needs to get a 5 star rating- even with an unfriendly receptionist and overpriced water. The atmosphere is wonderful on the course, the design challenging and the variety it gives from the typical park land courses is truly refreshing. A definitive "must play" when in the area (and focused on golf). Even for those that are more interested in club house lunches, the stunning view of the ocean will compensate for higher prices.

Rip Off

First of all, of course this is a very nice course.
Ocean Views, interesting holes and well kept greens.

This said, a mere 150 greenfee is ridicolous.
Service is non existant. Tee boxes like on the beach.
No halfway house, no water( 2 euro extra for the bottel the "starter"
handed out, no any other goodies. The receptionist did not even manage to properly say good morning.

Go somewhere else.

Not worth the money

Played the course in June 2013. It's (always very) windy and the greens and fairways are not in the condition you would expect for a course that claims to be in the top 100 of the world.

Links Course

The course was clearly placed as a left-hand course in the dune and pine landscape! Very original and rough!
I am an absolute fan of these places. I have played 48 courses in Portugal, Arthur Hills Designcourse Oitavos Dunes is always in the top 3 in Portugal for me.

You should already play

The layout is convincing, as all holes can be accessed after the round. You should avoid the dunes. Greens and fairways in good condition. The par 3s (holes 14 and 15) in particular are brilliant. The two final holes (par 4 each) at 417 and 411 meters are quite demanding. Organization is excellent if you stay in the associated hotel. When the wind blows it becomes really difficult.

You can, but you don't have to!

I expected much more. The place has nothing to do with links. The condition after the summer was good, except for the bunkers, which were really bad. There is a lot of need for renovation in this area. Ultimately, it remains to be said: there is a wide gap between claims (or rather, advertising) and reality. How could the place be rated among the top 100 in Europe? The Greefee is unreasonably high at €146 a week and €176 at the weekend. You can still have fun, at least if the putter is a good friend.

It's just a links course

The condition was very good in March 2023. As far as the layout is concerned, well, links courses are very open and live from the wind, that's the way it is. I wouldn't necessarily rate the course as the No. 1 in Portugal either, but the undulating fairways and greens, which were also fast and on track, made the course a lot of fun.

Totally overrated and overpriced

Positive: The condition of the place was very good in all areas.
But: According to the advertising and self-description and the price, the expectations of the place are high, our disappointment was even greater: the place is completely boring, I can relate to the last reviews with "meadow", "back and forth golf" to 100 % connect. The greens are rarely defended, there are bunkers in the drive landing zone, but it is so wide that you can hit almost anywhere. As already described, there are several tracks next to each other on a plateau, which you play back and forth. In contrast to many coastal places, the sea can only be seen from afar. None of this has anything to do with links golf.
Green fee (133) completely covered, the place is not worth 60 euros in D. Then there are the insane prices for a (rickety) trolley (8 euros).

Top place with wind

Real dune course with a lot of wind, which is very noticeable in some holes. Awesome par 3 with a view of the sea and a headwind. High tees with a chance of getting an eagle on a par 4.
Great greens and fairways, even if some of them are not well separated from other fairways.

When it's windy, there's definitely a left-course feeling here. Highly recommended and professionally organized.

#1 in Portugal? But a bit exaggerated!

Hotel:
I give it 5*. Huge (approx. 70m2) rooms, very clever, open integration of the bathroom into the living room, extensive breakfast menu, very good food in the evening, friendly staff.
A bit remote from Cascais, but you don't need more than 15 minutes by taxi to the center.
Golf course:
Maximum 3*. Rather disappointing for me. Sometimes you get the feeling that you are playing on a large meadow (for example, if three lanes run into each other without any separation). Only a few tracks are visually and playfully interesting. Since I've played in the Algarve and all over the world (for my taste) already considerably nice places.

Totally overrated

Top 100 of the world... I just can't believe that

On the “plateau” there are 7 lanes more or less directly next to each other, and if you don't have a flight ahead of you, with some lanes you don't know where you are going to play

The sea is always very far away, other places are much better (troia)

The strong wind doesn't make it easy, but you can come back to the clubhouse with all your balls.

Food there: excellent
Outlook: great
Espresso: very tasty

Played another course?

Whether it's No. 1 or not, the course is very beautiful and although not a real challenge for so long. Especially in the wind. Then a par 3 suddenly plays with an 8 iron instead of an 8 iron. Or a par 4 of 434 m can be reached with a drive and an 8 iron. We found the holes varied and interesting. Played 3 times in two weeks. It doesn't have to be more than that. But in Spain and other countries, for example, I have played significantly worse, boring or neglected courses.

Really overrated

After the course description you can expect a lot. The fairways are very good and the greens also excellent. Some difficult tracks, after which we asked ourselves how the rating was set up.
In addition to some tracks, but it looks like a conversion takes place, screes, tree remains, etc. At comparable places of the announced level, it looks very different. A dune landscape is not that!!
Toilet in adjusted quality: unfortunately not. Nice clubhouse with decent food.
We had previously played another link course in the Algarve, this was much nicer.
For two to three laps, the place is good, but you should not expect so high as they are induced by the description and the price

Overrated

Why this place has found entrance in many golf books as a top resort in Europe does not open to me.
The 5th * is far from it!
For a links course is missing the proximity of the sea, and also the view is only temporarily similar to the left. Nevertheless, the wind was very strong.
Several holes "back and forth golf"
Care condition can be improved.
Friendly front desk: exchanged already paid, but due to injury not usable green fee without objection to two e-carts!

Overrated???

This was the golf course No. 1 in Portugal and No. 55 in Europe! I like other places better. Sure: you have from almost all lanes a beautiful view of the sea, but only in the distance. Between the golf course and the coast there is still a nature reserve and the coastal road.
The course was well playable thanks to the Bermuda grass, even if it was still in hibernation. In some places it was a bit tight and often the tees landed on the oncoming train.
To call the course a links course is a bit risky. At the end of the course there are sand and a few dunes, but that's not enough. Rather, the place is characterized by stony intermediate areas that separate the adjacent tracks. In the middle course area these are 6 lanes, which hardly differ in their characteristics.
Maybe a professional looks different, but I liked some places in the Algarve better.
Secretariat and catering were very accommodating. As a running self-catering with its own e-Trolley one was almost regarded as a golf course.
It was quite an experience to have played here, but on our next holiday we will play the more northerly places.

Beautiful place, but...

We played the course on June 7th. The condition of the fairways and greens was outstanding. The course is playfully challenging and fun. But now:
There is one on the square! Unisex toilet, a mobile house in bad condition, in the middle of the lane 9. Although the tees are marked on the course, there is no indication of the course of the course or the length of the games, so that confusion can easily occur and you is going in the wrong direction. Again, this is not the standard of a good golf course. The secretariat is limited friendly and not very flexible. 60 euros for a cart without GPS and without rain (in pouring rain) are completely covered. Although the place was empty, a forwarding of our start time was rejected on the grounds that the place was fully booked. We started earlier and did not see other players in front or behind us during the round.

Beautiful coastal place

The Oitavos Dunes Golf Course is about 30 minutes' drive from downtown Lisbon.
We played there in December. During this time, the restaurant and the associated hotel are closed.
Of course, you also notice this on the pitch in the form that the operation is limited.
The condition of the place was medium-good. It is a beautiful resort with a lot of views of the Atlantic Ocean.
If you are looking for a coastal place near Lisbon, you will surely come here for the money.
Outrageous, we found only the tight 60 € for a cart. That will probably be much cheaper.

The condition is great and the greens very line loyalty and extremely fast.
Feeling when putting is necessary.

Nature links!!!

After 10 years I was again inspired by Oitavos Duens!
The nature links from the spring of Arthur Hills is undoubtedly the best that Europe has to offer!
Please remember, the natural dunes and the unique pine forest are deliberately primitive and naturally in the game! A one-of-a-kind golf course which you can play for 70, - € inclusive car depending on the booking portal or provider! And our country meadows on the local wet meadows are already worth it!

Course design top, conditioning flop

7-8 years ago, this place was the high green fees (150 euros) worth because the ancillary services (water to take away, coffee and rolls at the start, great service, etc.) agreed and everything was new. The clubhouse was never entertained in the meantime, the service is rude, scruffy, the driving range, start the games just as they come. The course design has remained the only, but the maintenance leaves much to be desired.
Give you a little effort: the once most exciting place in the region at this dream location that does not deserve!

Very good place but not top 100

Was lucky / unlucky to play the course in October with almost no wind on a green fee providers for almost 100 euros. The place is fun, partly great view but a signature hole I personally have not found on this links course. (More likely, the adjacent houses architects ...) For me, not top 100, have however only 4 played out of the top 100, but they were all much better. When you're in the area, but you should definitely play it. Driving Range somewhat disappointing, Clubhouse has not spoken to me, the hotel looks cool, but it was too expensive. Maybe the place has to play twice to arrive at a final judgment.

Stunningly beautiful, varied and naturally

Only the second time and with little wind my eyes for the beauty of the place was really open. It has been built of natural materials, no concrete or asphalt. Sand dunes right on the green, villas, just at the beginning and at a distance. Great views, each hole distinctly different. We have taken and the bumpiness is moderate. Friendly service at Cluhhaus. We'll gladly come back.

Impressive square, Clubhouse disappointing

Our round has left a mixed impression. Of course, the situation in the Atlantic is impressive, but the layout Praya del Rey offers more. The condition is excellent, but you must be dependent on the sand dunes do not expect deep green fairways and paved Cartwege. The clubhouse is virtually unoccupied and locks to even on weekends by 17 clock. Certainly worth a visit, but 150 euros Greenfee even in low season and 70 euros for a E-Cart are already steep.

In addition to the fairways pine forest undergrowth. The greens disproportionately fast, 3 - Putts churning. Maybe something for Professionals. Layout relatively flat and up to Bunker hardly obstacles. The rich pine. For loose-round sporting rather unsuitable and too expensive.

Great place and worth every penny

We played Oitavos Dunes in May 2013. Although it is now almost a year since I can still remember every hole. This is a sign of a good golf course for me.

The service is great. Trolley and Yardage Book were included in the green fee. The views are fantastic. My favorite holes were perforated 8, a par 5 that ends between the sand dunes. Hole 9 and 10 have a wonderful Blocking out to sea. Hole 11 is a short par 4 that can be attacked directly. And the Signature Holes are then surely hole 14 + 15

The place is actually increased again at number 65 in the Top100 ranking 2013. Such a place can not be built anywhere. There needs a special cookie earth.

Wonderful Links Golf Course in Portugal

Was now the second Time in early February here. This time the weather has rather shown by his rough side and it has four days pretty stormed and rained again and again. Due to the sandy structure of the course, however, was to record each day properly. From hole 5 which is the could also be found in Ireland a links course. The tees, fairways and greens are in great condition. But typical of a links course should meet the fairways, otherwise it is in the dunes or in the pine forest. This is certainly not a course for players who expect the next play, a completely Missed ball without trouble is. The par 3 is not without even here it means to hit the green. I am excited about this course because it requires a golfer everything, especially when the storm roars across the Atlantic. The mixture of the length of the holes is well chosen, very short but tricky par 3 but also with a 200m. It's the same with the par 4 holes on one you can even attack the green, but there are others that are hard to reach in two shots. Here it means to play with brains. An absolute top position.

This is a links course!

Oitavos is an outstanding place! It lies on sand dune soil and is so "dry". Too bad that so many do not realize this. That not everything is so extreme artificially maintained because of the rugged terrain of the Atlantic as on some typical holiday places where Cartwege and signage are the most important, is clear! No Oitavos was originally established by a famous designer name Athur Hills in this unique landscape! It is a links course with southern charm. Praia del Rey, Oitavos and Troia, despite Monte Rei and San Lorenzo 3 my absolute favorites in Portugal!
Oitavos is a top place in the wind, all the golfers calls!

We played the course on 24/04/12 with a good wind and had real links feel, there is joy or frustration on. The place was swift as an arrow in a good condition and the greens. Some web guide a bit boring, up and down, but with beautiful views to the sea. The Dünenlandschft and overall grounds were a Blütenrausch in all colors. If the place was not booked through a hotel package he is simply too expensive and overrated, there are far prettier links in Portugal.

Good! But among the top 100 in the world?

We have recorded Oitavos in April 2012. It was not very busy (although on a Saturday)., And we could play alone The place is nicely laid out and offers some variety. Some holes are built into the dunes and one almost has the impression that you would be all for yourself. Other holes run parallel to the other - as is often the case. Unfortunately, the state of some fairways care was not very good. Although there was a lot of rain in April, many jobs were available, reminiscent of dry grasslands. The HCPs Schwierigkeitsgard also for medium (25) is not too high.
The service is friendly and very helpful.
But the classification of the golf magazine is not traceable. When played around. 80 seats in the last 5 years (mainly Europe), we can easily identify several places that are in a state and bessseren - subjective - some were more interesting. It is not even hard, some places (like BUDERSAND) in Germany named. The relatively good classification of the magazine can also be felt in the price you paid, we still offer, pp 125 euros, far too expensive for the place.

We played the course at 08:12 and 11.12.2011 in good weather (11-18 ° C) and little wind.
The range was scruffy and expensive, the roads would have to be renewed once. On Sunday we did not miss a cart took us to the return flight was quite expensive at € 70 and the bottle of water had to be paid even gesondet. For this, the green fee in the total price with the hotel (Viva Marinha) was extremely cheap at this time.

Overvalued beautiful place, but

I played Oitavos on 29.8.2011 and had a very nice round. As one of the Vorbewerter wrote, a few (but not all!) Brought forward yellow tees, but that did not bother me. Who has more length, can indeed refuse of white...
The tracks I was not overly difficult, the difficulty is, as so often on links courses mainly on the wind - and often blows here quite strong, especially in the afternoon (about 20 knoten/5Bft, the windsurfing paradise, Guincho is located right down on the beach. ..).
The place is from September ( "high season") as indicated also very expensive right here. In July / August of this year it cost 60 € a cocktail in the exclusive Oitavos Hotel (on the square) included. For this price you can not complain. Driving range I have left, the prices and the state (see Vorbewerter) are probably Portuguese standard on all seats all around.

More shine than reality

After pleasant welcome by the reception staff and caddy master the expectations were very high. Also claimed that one of themselves to be among the top 100 courses in the world, these expectations do not read are smaller. However, even the state of the driving range lies doubts. Total rundown teeing grounds, to himself stainless canopies and totally overpriced range balls (50 shares at € 5), darkened the mood. Also in the square was what shines is not gold. Partial long, located in a very bad state paths between the individual tracks placed high demands on stamina and concentration. Also that all the yellow tees were moved forward to the blue tees, was not necessarily contribute to the joy of playing. Otherwise, the place is very well integrated and leaving the web is almost always punished with loss of the ball. Conclusion: An overrated in my view, the Court had only by the greatly reduced Greefees Olimar a useful price-performance ratio.
