Characteristics

Edzell Golf Club was laid out by architect, Bob Simpson, in 1895, and redesigned by James Braid in the 1930s. The Old Course is situated at the gateway to the Grampians in the foothills of the Angus Glens. Indeed the mountains form a backdrop to this lovely heathland course. The 9 hole West Water course, designed by Graeme Webster, was opened in 2001. The Club is located in the beautiful village of Edzell, midway between the cities of Dundee and Aberdeen. Green fees represent excellent value and the welcome is friendly and hospitable.

A great place

We got a good first impression in the parking lot, which we then got confirmed in the golf shop (registration). There was no birdie book, but the holes (on a card) are attached to the score card (unfortunately very small, of course, but everything is on it). The staff was very friendly and we got the usual logo ball.

A small putting green is right next to the first tee and already made a good impression (but also the indication that the greens have just received maintenance work). But the tea boxes already gave the indication that the place offers a very high quality. They resembled a carpet, cut very evenly and uniformly.

Due to the rain that we had during the night, there was temporary water on some lanes, but that's ok, because the ground can only gradually process the necessary moisture. The tracks are very interesting and some of the fairways are very wavy. There are some blind haircuts and the lanes are released again when the bells ring. It is a very fair parkland course. The first two lanes are accompanied on the right side by houses from whose gardens devious balls may not be taken because there is a ban on entry. But the balls shouldn't go there anyway and the fairways are wide enough.

The more lanes we left behind, the more height differences came into play, so later there was a par 3, with a plateau on which the green is located, here everyone needs a certain distance or you have to continue playing on a slope. This is followed by a par 4, which also ends with a plateau after a larger wave in the fairway. Here it is even more important to land on the green, as the differences in height mean difficult situations and tasks.

There are "only" two par 5 holes, which makes the course rather short, but still challenging.

The gastro is divided into two areas, members and visitors, but the service is the same for both, very friendly and fair prices. There is an extensive golfer's menu, with very good snacks and more. We made use of it and it tasted very good.

We recommend the place unreservedly and wish everyone a nice game.

Nice and affordable Parkland Course

Very nice, moderate and varied parkland course. I liked the second nine a little better than the first one. The place was today in perfect (!) Condition, Faurways, Vorgrüns and greens leave nothing to be desired. Price \ performance ratio very good.
