...two very great courses, one from O'Meara and one from Montgomerie - the player who never won a Masters - can be played here. Both are very good, which one is the favorite is a matter of taste...
It's a great place to spend the night, it's a cozy, quiet location. Only the R148, which borders the complex to the south, provides some entertainment.
An extremely spacious, extensive facility, some of the best you can find in Ireland!!!
Playing an artificial inland links course of this quality has only happened to us once - in South Africa - Fancourt - The Links by Gary Player.
The Montgomerie Course is simply amazing, more than 130 man-deep pot bunkers have been distributed on this course and want to spoil the player's score. They are perfectly placed and very difficult to play, you can rarely play the direct line to the flag, everyone is waiting for balls to come.
If you hit the greens with your second or third shot, the problems really start!!!
These literally drove us to despair - the speed was brutal - there was only one birdie, everyone had to run around the hole several times - 3 - even 4 - putts were recorded - not just once!
Hole 18 showed everyone the master, the exposed green hidden behind the oak trees was the "brilliant" final point.
Speaking of bunkers: We only know two courses that are in this league when it comes to bunkers: Le Robinie (Italy) and Southern Dunes (Florida), they have even more!
It's a tough task to play par here because the ground doesn't give much roll - the storm has had an effect here - it's soft, not typical on the left. Then there is the terrain, most of the greens are significantly higher - not typically on the left either... you play mostly uphill!!! Finally the greens, with lots of fine beaks and undulations, with crazy speed!!!
There is a lot of movement in the game, the course, the holes - tees, the fairways and the greens.
Montgomerie worked here with Stany Eby, who built the Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links together with Bernhard Langer.
Mark O'Meara's Parkland Course has a completely different character, is largely just as open and has far fewer bunkers. The ones there are very well placed - fairways and greens - are much better to play than those on the left.
Playing this course is almost a mental and golfing relaxation, it also follows the natural terrain which, however, provides far less movement. However, there are two really tough par 4s, with more than 400 meters.
Both courses provide an average of over 365 meters per hole, but the Monti is more difficult to play, in our opinion.
Tees perfect, greens simply amazing, fairways cut a bit high - due to the weather.
We tried the blue tees - wrong decision because of the ground conditions and the weather - and paid a lot of money - including balls!!!
Everyone had a lot of fun, the scores were ultimately secondary - partly due to the fact that you couldn't buy any Birdie Books...
There's no question that the courses deserve five stars, as does the resort!

We played the "O'Meara" course at the end of May 2022 and found it to be a very well-maintained course with fast greens that remained on track. Tees and fairways were also well maintained and the holes are interesting and varied. We particularly liked holes 13,14,15 and 17. At the end of the loop, the view of Carton House is a lovely ending - we'll be back!

Have played both the Montgomerie and the O'Meara golf course. We were fortunate enough to get a "hot deal" for both courses at short notice. TIP: If you're flexible, a short-term booking pays off.

Places were in a very good condition and contrary to some reviews on various forums was also the Montgomerie in wind and the course length demanding and varied. The raised, fast greens and the 163! Bunker (Montgomerie) expects another challenge in both places. The 18th hole at the Montgomerie invites you to conclude with the nice motif for a nice graduation photo.
The O'Meara has a little bit of everything. Open Fairwaiys, some bunkers in front of the greens and especially the last PAR 3's are really great. Both courses are definitely recommended!
