Disappointing

We recently played at Sotogrande as a foursome. Given the reputation this course has as one of the best in Spain (and Europe) we were not surprised to read their strict pace of play policy. There is a policy that a third warning to pick up your pace would result in ejection/no refund. However, a very large group of male players in front of us (about 5 or 6 Foursomes) were permitted to play extremely slowly without consequence. The Marshall kept apologizing to us but did nothing. At one point, two of the Foursomes joined together and were playing as 8. Totally unacceptable. In the end, we waited on every shot and it took 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete the round. Pretty much ruined it for us. There were no managers still on site when we finished so couldn’t even complain. Suggest playing at Valderrama and Finca Cortesin where the courses were beautiful and exceptionally well managed.

Beautiful Place Design

We played the course at the end of November 2023 and were wonderfully looked after by two members of the flight. The course design is very attractive, although the second 9 holes are more exciting to play. The tracks around the lake are particularly beautiful. Tees, fairways and greens were very well maintained - we had a wonderful day in wonderful weather, and the friendliness of the members contributed to this. The price for the green fee is of course pretty decent at 300.00!

The starts are every 6 minutes, which is much too short, so it already backs up after the first hole and you can hardly complete the round in less than 5 hours. The course layout is wide and clear, but relatively boring. The fairways okay in terms of maintenance, there was a lot to complain about on the greens. The lack of any labeling is really annoying: neither where to go to the next tee nor a graphic representation of the hole on a board with distance information. Ultimately, this reinforces the impression you get from the start: As a non-insider, commonly known as a green fee player, you are undesirable, even though the fees are steep. If you enter the club restaurant after your round and look around, there is a nicely decked area for members and a much less attractive part for the non-privileged. The range of food is measly, just sandwiches and the obligatory club toast. If you compare that with the finca or even better La Zagaleta, then you will be more than disappointed.
