Characteristics

Playa Grande Golf and Ocean Club, in Rio San Juan, Dominican Republic, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. This course has been dubbed the 'Pebble Beach of the Caribbean' because of its setting on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Playa Grande is suitable for serious or casual golfers alike. In addition to the exceptional views, all players agree on the beauty of the design along with the high quality greens, bunkers and fairways. The golf course has since been extensively revived by his son, famed golf course architect Rees Jones.

Skies are blue, Knudson too!! 1 Review

There was a time.

Played Playa Grande in early 2000's before it was taken over by current owners. It was the original course, last course of Robert Trent Jones, who created magical links (such as Hazeltine, Firestone, Kananaskis, Bellerive, Port Royal, Congressional, etc),before they changed the back 9
Conditions were good, course is great. 10 holes along the ocean. Played with 2 fellows from California coast who said it compared favourably with Pebble Beach.. and without the crowds.
Time of my life, even though some holes require a carry, over huge gulch. That is not as much the course now apparently.
But, sadly, now it is so expensive $515 for non guests, $315 if a guest), at a cost of nearly $1000 a day from what I understand. So, the days of glory and access are gone. What A Pity. A Pity.

Paradise Lost

I have played Playa Grande golf course 11 times, beginning in 1999 and ending about six years ago. It was a beautiful course but because of the location it was never really busy. This piece of heaven has turned into an unmitigated disaster. How the local government could allow this wonderful place to be run by a bunch of greedy investors is beyond me. What should have been an attraction for golfers from all over the world has been turned into a joke because of the ridiculous green fees and the destruction of much of the course on the back nine. I am so happy that I got to play there when it was affordable and I would highly recommend that golfers STAY AWAY.. The place is a total rip off and their proclamation that "all guests welcome" is laughable.. So sad..

Course closed to public

Unless you stay at the hotel or have a villa at Playa Grande you can not play this course. I live close by and went to Play and was told I would have to stay at the Hotel to play the course. Needless to say I was disappointed. It was a good thing I live close by as I would not wanted to have had to drive a long way to be told this.
