Characteristics

With the purchase of Doonbeg in 2014, the vision of it's new owner, Mr. Donald J Trump, of a truly great links course, immediately began to take shape. The significant task of the redesign of Doonbeg rested with Dr. Martin Hawtree, a 3rd generation architect. Dr. Hawtree had already designed the spectacular course at Trump International Scotland, and with a portfolio that includes Lahinch, Portmarnock, St Andrew's and Muirfueld, we know the finished result would be remarkable and it is.

It is located around 40 minutes west of Shannon airport and the layout is characterised by mountainous sand dunes and dramatic sea views. Watch out for the magnificent par-3 14th, the signature hole on the course: it is, truly, one of the best short holes in golf.

Picture-perfect links

Played on 4.6.2019, HCP 11

A HAMMER from a links course - just like a picture book! Bent, hilly fairways winding through high dunes. Offside threatens deepest rough and also on the fairways one is not sure - here lurk deep pot bunkers. Again and again, beautiful views of the sea offer - it is partly so close, that one should not scatter his strokes too much. Also blows from here like a left-typical stiff breeze. The greens are interesting - not easy to read, but never unfair.

Unfortunately, some lanes are very similar, so the pitch is technically not quite as interesting.

The care condition also has minor defects.

The course can easily be played without a cart. If you, like us, play the day before a visit of the owner Donald, you may even have to do without a cart - they are all for cleaning, overhauling or bomb control...

The clubhouse / restaurant seems a bit "contrived" - Hollywood meets old clubhouse -, the big clock in front is chic, but "a little" showy...

Conclusion: Despite the horrendous green fee - play at least once! Just 4 stars - for even more, some courses are just too similar and not well enough maintained. (In the "Golf Bear Ranking": 7 out of 10 points.)

What a pity!

27/4 2019 played Great clubhouse, great service, unfortunately some holes were closed due to renovations, greens were in an absolute desolate condition! Layout and visually very nice, of course a shame!

Very good links

Despite a big request, everything was perfectly organized. Great range and a starter who, like in big tournaments, greets every single player. As long as you do not have to play against the wind, despite difficult greens to master. Good fairways, great location in the dunes. But if you have to play against the wind, you know what links mean. The caddies seemed a bit "listless" to me, but is understandable in the mostly "loud" Americans who like to improve their game with beer or Wiskey at nine. 90% of the green fee players in the trendy places of Ireland come from the USA. You should play the course.
