Hoping for the best

I read the reports about the dry fairways, etc. But I also note the golf management responses which is good and humble and positive. Therefore I booked for my wife and I for the coming weekend in the hotel, plus spa treatments plus golf. I know all will be fine...

Nice course

Dry but fair course. Correct services but nothing more. A little bit outworn clubhouse.
On the course some nice holes and herd of springbok.
Fair value.
A course you can play. Maybe way better when the greens and fairways are green - after next rain period again.

Low recall value

Devonvale is a typical wine estate parkland course but of rather modest quality. The first nine holes are partly on slightly undulating terrain, so the topography still provides some entertainment. The second nine holes are mostly flat and offer little tension.

The quality of the fairly wide fairways varies from relatively good to just acceptable. The semi-rough is difficult to play - the grass sticks like glue. The greens are good and fast, sometimes banally flat and sometimes beautifully undulating. The bunker sand is easy to play on. Natural obstacles occur sporadically from time to time, but they are hardly worth mentioning.

Conclusion: in three days at the latest I hardly remember anything about the place. therefore: no risk of repetition.

Nice golf experience in a well-kept facility

You could be annoyed that the cart was made available quite late or that the waitress in the restaurant obviously has no idea about her own menu, but everything else was just good. Great facility with varied courses, good maintenance and lots of springboks that you can almost pet. Good signage even for non-locals. Driving range and chipping area a good 150 m from the clubhouse, but still available. Unfortunately there were no ice buckets on the cart, but we were given a bucket of ice. I would love to play here again at any time.

Finally beautiful again!!

We still know the place from 2016 and 2019 and now 2023! Finally someone took money and invested it, planted trees, prepared the water hazards, planted flowers. A really great team of greenkeepers was brought in.
It was a lot of fun to play the course again in such great condition... and the Springboks were jumping around happily too 😍

Well maintained and varied

The entire facility presented itself to us in a well-maintained condition. The greens were a bit slow compared to other courses in the region, but still much faster than the average greens in Germany.
Depending on your fitness level and taste, you should take a cart for the partly hilly and varied tracks.
The lanes are well signposted, but if you play here without knowledge of the course, you will be surprised on one or the other lane.
The level of difficulty increases with the wind speed and we repeatedly had enough of it 😉
The negative: The entrance gate and the starter (something more friendliness would be nice).
We booked here through “GolfTeeTimes” and still got 530 Rand p. Person paid + 430 Rand p. Cart (the prices in the overview are probably older).

Nice environment, chubby members

We played the course a total of three times. It presents itself in reasonable condition; in places it is very dry, the greens are impeccable. The site is scenically attractive and offers beautiful views of the adjacent vineyards and the hilly countryside. The terrain is slightly hilly, but even at higher temperatures the course is easy to walk on. Various birds and springbok accompany the players on their round.
Absolutely strange were the club members. Younger men in particular presented themselves very ruthlessly. On our laps we were dangerously "bombed" from behind several times. When we then dared to say something, we were arrogantly scolded. The starter was not impressed by our complaint. The club members also noticed negatively several times after the round. They allowed themselves to be drunk uncontrollably in the club restaurant and were so loud (every day) that the guests who wanted to eat something and talk were massively disturbed.
Our conclusion: An attractive golf course, on which you don't feel very welcome.

Good and bad

We have been guests of the hotel for a few days and are very satisfied with the hotel and the restaurant. We have problems with the pro shop. Tee times can only be booked 4 days in advance. Apparently, other players can book longer term, so that the pleasant tee times are given at the current temperatures. Although golf carts in the parking lot. stood, namely 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the Proshop, we could not book a cart. As hotel guests, we expect a response from the club management, as we are staying in the hotel for over a week.

Tuscany in South Africa

Beautifully cut varied place.
With trees, ditches, hilly. Many places still without grass and dry. Nice staff, good prices, barely full. Great for scoring.
The obligatory "wild" animals on the course has probably every place in ZA.
View of a Tuscan hill landscape with wineries also outside.
The huge sandbox in the middle appeared after closer inspection on old pictures as a lake. However, it would be outrageous to judge the place over the lack of water. I'm glad that nobody turned off the depressing township on the way there to fill the lake.

Golfer heart aches

The golf course at Devonvale presents itself in a very poor condition, lack of water. It just makes no joy more and a golfer comes barely beat. And after the game you will be culinary disappointed even in the restaurant.

Catastrophic condition

This golf course is an impertinence to play for us golfers. All water storage in the square are empty. Instead of the grass on the fairways can be found only rock-hard earth. Only the greens are (still) in good condition.

Dear Werner, not sure if you are aware that we are currently in the worst drought the Cape has ever experience. With less than 100 days of usable drinking water left it is surely the biggest crisis we as Capetonians have ever faced. Under the conditions our golf course is in excellent condition. We have received so many compliments from guests regarding our greens, and some have even written that it is currently the best in the Cape. With our fairways being dry we have gone the extra mile in ensuring the attention to detail on the course is better than ever! Our tee-boxes and green surrounds are still green and lush.
We are hoping and praying that the rains come soon and that not only our golf course become green again, but that we will have drinking water after April.
We hope to welcome you back next year to a green lush Devonvale.

Sad

The course is for us actually one of the best in the wine region only at the time by aktutem drought completely dry are only the green super Everything else is no longer We understand that here we have to save water, only we do not understand that, for example, Clovelly, Erinvale, beach, small Zalze, Paarl, ect ect really all spaces contrast green are also in 2016 it was so, what is in Cevonvale the matter is also the restaurant with its great terrace so what of poor, each Pizzabude better We just find sad and incomprehensible and explain can us also not a huge plus here are all of the starter to Donevan at the front desk was super nice helpful and always cheerful the audience is international, not just retirees transition as Erinvale

Dear Sir, thank you for your email and if I may explain why our course is dry and others not.
All other courses in the Western Cape receive water from external resources. We are the only golf course in the cape that is self sustainable. We make use of our own grey water and our dam resources. We are the future of how golf courses should be run. With water becoming such scarce resource in the Cape we cannot afford to have green fairways and no drinking water. All courses should strive to be like us!
Hope to welcome you back next year after good winter rains to a green lush Devonvale.
Kind Regards
Ryno Bernardo

Golf at Parkland Course with Springboks

I have the place played 5 times already. He has a superb location. Mature trees surrounded by vineyards overlooking the Simonsberg. The courses are challenging and varied in wind. Many lakes and water hazards are not completely full in January 2017 due to lack of water: good for the score, bad for nature. The balls roll far on the fairways. The greens are watered and maintained. Exceptional are the Springboks on the premises; us they have fallen. The staff is friendly and the prices are very fair. This also applies to the restaurant with an outdoor terrace. We will be back!

Actually said everything

Wonderful place far from Stellenbosch. Are went there on 16th December lunch without registration and get an instant start time. In the previous articles all is said. Secretariat very friendly. They make you feel comfortable and will, when we are near, play this course again. Greenfee correction: 18/620 RD.

Sympathetic place located wonderfully

Just outside Stellenbosch we played within 3 days twice the square. Varied holes with a beautiful panorama. Again and again intersect Springboks the fairways. Authentic scene Caddy Master. Very fair prices. Caution: Sometimes it has strong wind, it is a real challenge. The Terrace after the game invites you to linger. Superb beef.

A cheap alternative near Stellenbosch

Devonvale is a very decent place, very playable for the equivalent of about € 30,00, the greens are well maintained, the fairway here and there "under Construktion", but for the price what will you complain there? Here and there one sees Springboks at the plant, which we liked.
The plant presents itself maintained, even a driving range is available. The Clubhouse terrace is beautiful and the food is recommended. Come and play to talk; everything at home is in the winter a lot worse;.)

Beautiful plant

In the high season in February it is very difficult short tee times to get there very crowded. Nevertheless, we really liked the place and the condition was very good. Can recommend it.

Beautiful place, but without highlights

There are certainly more interesting places in South Africa, but when you're near, you can create a peaceful play a round of golf, especially since it is possible to obtain with some flexibility in the short term a Tee Time.
Cart is required. Trees provide shade on almost every fairway, so the place is to play well even in bright sunshine and heat.

Not very customer friendly

We played the course today. The place itself is in good condition and very player friendly. The course maintenance was very good for summer.
My husband and I have borrowed our club hire. These were an absolute impudence! My ladies club set consisted of 4! different brands( Adams Driver, 2 woods Calaway completely outdated, 2 woods of an unknown brand, 7-wood and wood 9, tiny face, probably 10-20 years old, 5 iron also of a completely unknown brand.
My husband also got a motley set of Mizuno. No bat was from the same set, some had steel-some graphite shafts.
And these "thugs" cost just as much (290 Rand per set) such as at the Pezula Golf Club.

We would not recommend the place!

... Absolute dream place!

... Is certainly not the hardest place of all time, but in tip top shape... it is mowed, trimmed, shaved and cleaned!

In addition, cheap and the staff very friendly!

Beautiful place with potential

We have the space played on 1/1/2013, although we were discouraged. The place is in comparison to other places in the region nothing special. Marshall said the pro shop at check in, it was not the most difficult, but also not the easiest golf course in the region. and we can confirm. We found the place surprisingly varied and not boring. Disturbing was only the extreme contamination by Gänsekot discount on 1 and 9 Green. Apart from this, the place was very nice to play. What it definitely is lacking irrigation. The fairways were sometimes quite hard, but that was still bearable. Here is still potential for improvement. Otherwise, the place was in good shape. The partially located on the mountain fairways require some well-placed shots. Beautiful view from the clubhouse terrace... We would play it again.
