An excellent and affordable parkland course 24. November 2009
Letterkenny is a surprise to many people. First of all, it is affordable and friendly, which is always a good start. Then you make your way to a tee box which is as fine a first as you will see on any parkland. Driving downhill towards a blind green through a corridor of mature broadleaf trees sets the scene perfectly for what lies ahead.
There are challenges, not least the 2nd which is a tough par 5 that had Paul McGinley advising it should be tempered. The holes along Lough Swilly are scenic and peaceful. Although only 10 minutes from the thriving town centre, you are worlds away and free to enjoy the golf.
The back nine weaves its way uphill through the old barnhill estate - again through a cluster of mature trees. The 11th is a fine long par 5 uphill to a vantage point where this course can be viewed in all its glory.
The 13th is definately unlucky for some, and is one of the longest par 3's i have ever played. Flanked by those trees, a green side bunker and a big fall off behind the green, a par is definately a good score. The closing holes all have their challenges - even stroke index 18, which is a short uphill par 3 which has a fantastic 2-tiered green gaurded by one of the deepest bunkers I have been in. The 18th is a big hitters paradise - again par 5, and finishing in a fantastic setting.
I would recommend Letterkenny highly. It may not be on your itinery list, but as all of who have been on a golfing holiday will tell you, it is the hidden gems which are the best. Letterkenny is definately one of those. The night-life isnt bad either :-)
